The new battletoads game just snuck on to store shelves yesterday, anyone else as hyped as I am for this game?
I am on vacation right now and forgot my pc controller at home so I can't play it until I get home tomorrow night, not that it would matter since the game is 10 gigs and hotel internet is really slow, but its been installing for the last 2 days and is almost done.
Early reviews have been very positive, saying that it captures the feel of the original while toning down the difficulty to something more manageable.
Any one play this yet or planning on it?

I don't remember Space Invaders or danmaku being in Battletoads!pook99 wrote:Early reviews have been very positive, saying that it captures the feel of the original while toning down the difficulty to something more manageable.
The art reminds me of the newer Rayman games.

Re: Battletoads are back!
It's an odd game. I've only played three stages and each one had a different gameplay style. I know the original mixed things up but this was one stage beat em up, one stage bike section (in 3D) and one stage was basically a WarioWare minigame. It's all well done, the combat isn't as tight as Streets of Rage 4 but it definitely has potential. The bike stage went on a bit too long however.
The game already seems a bit divisive online, although in the old fashioned sense of the word where reasonable discussion can be had. I'm definitely intrigued but if the game continues to ping-pong between genres then I can see where that might upset a few.

Re: Battletoads are back!
I just finished the game and I absolutely loved it.
I don't think many people realize how the old games played, probably because the difficulty is so obscene that most people never see past the first few levels. Most people see battletoads as a beat em up but it really isn't (except for the arcade game), the first level is a pretty standard beat em up, and after that every single level has a new gimmick and plays totally different, this is true for battletoads on nes and snes, and though to a slightly lesser extent, also true for battletoads and double dragon.
As a fan of the series, I absolutely loved the constant switching of level types, the game does a great job of paying homage to some of the gimmicks in the old games as well as introducing enough new play styles to keep things feeling fresh. Just about every game play type is well executed and a lot of fun, but if someone goes into this just expecting a beat em up they may be disappointed.

Both battletoads/double dragon and the arcade game had a space shooting level, but I think when people say that it captures the feel of the original they are referring more to the varied level design than any one specific gimmick.

I am actually not a fan of the art. Not sure if that puts me in the minority or not.
Re: Battletoads are back!
From the screenshots I've seen it feels like the art is trying too hard. They took the silly exaggerations of the original and amped them up a couple notches.

Re: Battletoads are back!
I've tried a few times now but Battletoads isn't clicking with me. The main issue is that it has all these different gameplay styles but it isn't really good at any of them. I wouldn't say it's flat out bad (although the Robotron style sections are quite poor) but what is perhaps ironic about Battletoads is that nothing stands out aside from the fact there is such a variety of different gameplay styles. It also creates a kind of ludic whiplash where you bounce between disparate gameplay styles and perspectives, never really getting in a groove. Battletoads has no chill and I find I can only play a few levels before I get tired out.
I'm not really saying the game should be just a straight brawler but it's really hard to be ten things at once and do them all well. However I can see how the variety would appeal to some. I do also admit that the slapdash nature of the game is kind of appealing on its own. It's a weird one for sure.
