I completely disagree that the quality of the top master system titles rival that of the nes, lets forget about quantity for a minute, obviously the more popular system will have more, but the quality of the top master system games are completely overshadowed by the quality of the nes titles.

There is no platformer on the master system even close to as good as Super Mario 1, let alone mario 2 and 3, no action game as good as the mega man or contra series, no action rpg as good as zelda, I could keep going but you get the idea.

Even the best master system games are often praised as lesser versions of similar nes games, just look at this thread and you see things like, ninja gaiden is great, not as good as the nes games or play golden axe warrior, its close to zelda, but not as good. Phantasy star may be an exception and I think a strong case can be made for dragons trap as well but outside of those 2 its not even close

@mobiusclimber: I, and every person on this thread, are including european releases so I don't think its unfair to knock the system for not having 10 good games. The N64 has less than 300 North American releases and I don't think anyone would have a problem naming 10 great games for that system, the fact that some on this thread, myself included, have trouble even getting to 10 speaks to the general quality of that system.
Unpopular opinion time (even tho this isn't the "Unpopular Video Game Opinion" thread): Sonic is better than Mario and the N64 is complete trash that I'd have a hard time listing 10 good games for. I didn't have to do too much thinking about my SMS list, but for the N64? Paper Mario, Smash Bros, Mario Kart, Hybrid Heaven and that's about it. (I also didn't buy one at launch but I suspect I still would have been disappointed if I had. I was a grown man so rose-tinted glasses wouldn't have appeared over my eyes, either.)

As for an SMB-killer on the Master System? Tough since SMB and in particular 3 are considered the pinnacle of platform gaming (not by me, tho). But I'd say Psycho Fox, the two later Wonder Boy games and even Asterix give Mario a run for his money. I suspect one of the Alex Kidd games is probably also just as good, but I haven't played the later titles so no idea. (Shinobi and High Tech World are supposed to be excellent, but I didn't own them when I was collecting for the SMS and I don't still have a collection so ...) Phantasy Star I would say is probably on par with DW3, but I would also point out that it seems to have been an influence on later Final Fantasies. When did FF start blending in sci-fi? Anyway, this is a long way to get to saying that I think the SMS, while not as great a system as the Genesis, is still a terrific rival to the NES and has a lot of games that should be played by anyone who enjoys early NES titles because there really is a lot to love here. Maybe they're all a bit rough around the edges. That's because this was mostly new territory at the time. Kind of like 3D was to the N64, but the SMS handled the new graphical capabilities just fine.

I enjoy the SMS but I wouldn't consider a worthy "rival" to the NES. More like a supplement. It's just a numbers game. The breadth of the NES library is just incredible. There are entire genres on NES that literally don't exist (or barely exist) on the SMS.

No, this is quite bad unfortunately. It's not what you're thinking. It's a crummy and obtuse adventure game reskinned with Alex Kid characters for its Western release.

The original Final Fantasy does have some sci fi, for the record. Time travel, robots... These are somewhat sloppily integrated elements though, compared to Phantasy Star which had a more legitimate sci fi world.

Huh, I guess I don't need to play High Tech World after all! LOL And you're right, I forgot about the time travel and robots. FF really feels like a medieval fantasy game for most of it, and honestly they probably adopted the sci-fi ideas from Might & Magic or Ultima, and not Phantasy Star, now that I think about it.

Maybe more like 85% overworld, 15% side scrolling.

@mobiusclimber: For me there is no comparison, Mario >>>>>>>>> Sonic, but I don't think that your opinion is that unpopular, people who love sonic, really love sonic, and commonly feel that it is the superior franchise.

I don't really disagree with you about the N64, for me the system is a bit of a curiousity more than anything, like its weird, I didn't play it when it was new, so I also have very few fond memories of it, it probably is my least favorite nintendo console, but at the same time it is the only cart based system that I collect for, probably because its not too expensive and emulation of it is not great. I do want to play more of it before I actively write it off but, as a nintendo fanboy, I won't stick up for the N64 like I will for other nintendo systems, the wii on the other hand, I will defend tooth and nail, IMO it is the most under rated system of all time, despite the fact that it is also the 2nd best selling system of all time.

@president leever: I think I am pretty good at parsing through nostalgia vs actual gameplay. For example, although Mega Man 2 is the game I have the fondest memories of and am extremely nostalgic for, I will also say that as a mega man game it is a bit over rated and not on par with some of the other games in the series (especially 9). My mention of kung fu kid at number 3 is not really a condemnation of the system as much as it is praise for kung fu on nes. I think kung fu kid is actually similar to that game but provides a deeper, more fleshed out experience.

Having said that I have played several of the titles you listed, SMS NG is a good game, but it is not nearly as good as the nes games. The story is trash, the characters are generic, the bosses are mindlessly easy, and the game does not feel as tight or responsive as the NES trilogy.

I havent played sonic 1 on master system(though I doubt I would enjoy it as I dont even like sonic 1 and 3 on genesis), but I have played land of illusion and while it is a decent game and graphically superior to smb, gameplay wise there is no comparison, smb is a faster, tighter, more polished game, more challenging game, and this is coming from someone who frequently calls the original smb the most over rated game of all time (right next to final fantasy 7 and ocarina of time)

I agree that wonder boy 3 is a brilliant game and is probably the best game on the master system, I never played that version but I'm assuming its a slight graphical downgrade from the tg16 version which I grew up on. I also love your mention of gargoyles quest 2, which in my mind, is one of the most under appreciated games on the nes.

I physically felt pain when I read that kenseiden is better than castlevania 1 and would argue that is your nostalgia talking.

Having said all that, I definitely agree with you that there are some more games I need to play, this thread has turned me on to some games that people are talking very fondly of that I never played, some that I never heard of. Some of the games I definitely want to try are:

golvellius
zillion 1
power strike 1 and 2
shinobi
rambo
psyco fox (which I think I may have played before but am not 100%)
cloud master
aztec adventure

and I will read through the thread again to see if I missed anything.

I will say that as much as I am bashing the system, I want to be clear that I really really want to like it. I love 8-bit games, and have zero nostalgia for the sms but do have a lot of curiousity for it and a complete romset for it. My experiences with the system so far has been underwhelming but I am always looking to expand my horizons.

I know this is off-topic but what I love about the Genesis Sonic games is that there's usually three different paths to the end of a level: a lower, middle and upper path. That makes Sonic stages endlessly replayable as opposed to Mario, who only has warp pipes that skip past parts of or entire levels. I also like that even if you get hit, you don't die and can actually recover a few rings so you won't die on the next hit either. Just makes for a more action-packed twitchy kinda gameplay.

That was some good discussion on the master system and now it is time to move onto the greatest sega console ever made, the sega genesis.

Although I am definitely more of a nintendo fanboy the genesis did a lot of things right, had great first and third party support, and some truly amazing games. So lets gush over our favorite genesis games. To date I have beaten about 80 genesis games so narrowing it down to 10 was not easy but in no particular order my top 10 on the genesis are:

blades of vengeance
bloodlines
hard corps
dick tracy
ghouls n ghosts
golden axe 2
gunstar heroes
warsongs
shining force
streets of rage 2

One of the interesting things about this list for me is that, despite the age of the genesis, very few these games are from my childhood while more then half I played for the first time as a young adult/adult, which is very different than the other classic consoles whose top 10 are strictly made up of games I played as a kid and frequently replay as an adult.

To me, that speaks to how many gems I missed out on as a kid because I was too busy playing (and enjoying) trashy fighting games like shaq-fu and pit fighter.

Warsong and Streets of Rage 2 are the most notable games on this list, sor2 is my favorite console beat em up of all time, and warsong is probably my favorite srpg of all time.

Golden axe 2 is not the greatest game in the world but it lights me up with warm nostalgia.

I did not play bloodlines, hard corps, or gunstar heroes until I was in my 20's, all 3 need no explanation, and if you read my posts you will frequently see me bashing bloodlines as the worst linear 2d castlevania, and while I stand by that statement, the worst castlevania is still better than most games and easily earns a spot on this list.

The remaining 4 picks I did not play until my late 30's, I was way late to the party regarding ghouls n ghosts but that is a truly fantastic experience. Shining force is just amazing and deserves all the hype it gets. The last 2 games on the list are definitely odd balls. Dick tracy was just addicting, really fun levels, really challenging, good, fast paced arcade action.

Blades of vengeance is a visually great hack n slash, it is odd at first, but when you get used to the slow and methodical gameplay it is very well done and tons of of fun to play.

What are your genesis top 10's?

I’ll bite. Here’s my top ten for the second-best 16-bit system:

Castlevania Bloodlines
Gunstar Heroes
Ms. Pac Man
Monster World IV
Rocket Knight Adventures
Sonic the Hedgehog 2
Streets of Rage 2
Super Fantasy Zone
Wonder Boy in Monster World

I’m sure there are some other great games (i.e., Alien Soldier, Landstalker, Phantasy Star IV, Shinobi III, etc.), but I only listed games I’ve beaten.

I'ma let you finish, but the Dreamcast was the best Sega console of all time. Of. All. Time.

But to answer your question, here's my list, in no particular order:

Shadowrun - this amazing action/RPG was "open world" on console before such a thing ever existed.
Sonic the Hedgehog 2 - tough choice between the first and second but the second game doesn't have a slow Zone like Marble Zone. I hate Marble Zone.
Phantasy Star IV - this is also a tough call because I really love PSII. I can admit, tho, that IV is the better game.
D&D Warriors of the Eternal Sun - This PC game inspired RPG features overworld top down battles and first person dungeon crawling.
Shining in the Darkness - an anomaly at the time, this game combines cute anime-inspired characters with first person dungeon crawling.
Shining Force - one of the first tactical RPGs and still one of the best.
Dragon's Revenge - a console pinball game that actually justifies being on a console.
Wings of Wor - one of my favorite shmups. I love the mix of organic and mechanical enemies (generally in the same enemy).
Alisia Dragoon - Ever wanted a pet dragon? This game is basically a platformer shmup and it's a lot of fun.
The Haunting Starring Polterguy - was this game influenced by Beetlejuice or the other way around? At any rate, it's the same premise. You are a ghost who has to scare the crap out of a family.

Honorable Mentions:
Beyond Oasis
Landstalker
Bio-Hazard Battle
Gaiares
Monster World IV
Golden Axe
Phelios
General Chaos
Sub-Terrania
Gunstar Heroes
Herzog Zwei
MUSHA
Master of Monsters
TMNT Hyperstone Heist
Ristar
Road Rash II
Saint Sword
Rocket Knight Adventure
Streets of Rage 2
Dune
Steel Empire
Arcus Odyssey
Trouble Shooter
Granada

A Genesis list that is void of Earthworm Jim is a list I can't get fully behind.

Earthworm Jim
Streets of Rage 1 or 2
Mutant League Football
Shinobi III
Gunstar Heroes
NHL 94
Hyperstone Heist
Sonic 2
The Adventures of Batman and Robin
Zombies ate my Neighbors

Probably. I really love Golden Axe, Batman, Altered Beast, Super Hang-On, Mickey Mania, EWJ 2, Aladdin, Chiki Chiki Boys, Mutant League Hockey, and I can still play Test Drive II The Duel for hours. I do play all of them after all.
