I haven't played the original, but I'm quite certain it's the same game, perhaps just with some "extras" thrown in.

Gunlord X in fact apparently features these extras:

Gunlord X is the definitive version of the 2012 arcade classic. It contains a large number of improvements and new features, including:

Increased level sizes with new secrets and challenges
A brand new stage
4 new boss enemies
A new power shot weapon
Difficulty adjustments, including re-balanced levels, permanent continues, level warp shortcuts and auto save features
New Game Mode+ and accomplishment screen, especially designed for speed runners
Various display settings, including scanline/RGB CRT TV options
Fully customizable controls and new, optional modern twin stick control setting

I spent few hours of my life trying to make my ps3+8bitdo dongle to work with GOG's installation of Tomb Raider with frustrating key mapping. I even tried to launch it via the Steam client. No use. The main menu just keeps spinning around like someone is pressing "left" forever. Went to Steam store, bought the trilogy for $3. Best $3 spent ever. 24 years later, finally, I will play Tomb Raider. Now my problem is mapping software I use is trial reWASD and I am not too convinced to pay $6 for it.

Honestly I am glad these all time classic games are still being sold...for $1! They don't sell movies and album for $1, not the good ones.

Holy shit the last couple years of AVGN episodes have been awful. James no longer plays the games or writes scripts, just narrates over footage. The quirky NES stuff has been tossed in favor of modern "meme" games (Drake of the 99 Dragons and so on). No passion, no energy. Even the "Nerd Room" is a green screen image. It's so bad.

Given how bad his "heyday" episodes were I can only imagine how terrible they are now.

I still watch AVGN and after each one I ask myself why I keep watching them. I was NEVER a superfan or anything but... I guess I like being exposed to bad games, even if he often exaggerates badness and they're definitely pretty cringe nowadays. And his non-AVGN videos are pretty unwatchable IMO.

Really the idea of looking at bad games has been perfected by Bad Game Hall of Fame. They go on some DEEP DIVES and really put bad games into context, the actual value and interesting aspects of bad games get highlighted without falling into the tired old "haha, the developers just had to be idiots" trope.

I think you are being too harsh on him. He has been doing this for 14 years. Naturally he lost the energy and enthusiasm. He also went through probably a couple of age groups since he started to that has to have an effect. The show clearly is not meant to be a professional analysis of the game, its comedy-mockery about bad games and people in it for the funny narration. I guess now its just something to put food on the table for him. I heard YouTube pays like $1000 for every 100K views. So if he makes like 4 videos a month at 200K/Vs , thats a nice $8K/M.

One thing I learned, is that people have extremely loyalty to tv shows. Its hard to get a following(some people get lucky somehow) but once there, they will just keep coming back. Most notable of this is WWE wrestling shows, people complain how bad it is but they keep tuning in week after week. Some other shows Wheel of Fortune (45yrs), David Lettermen(33yrs), Survivor(20yrs), Larry King Live(25yrs).

I still enjoy AVGN for what it is, it is never laugh out loud funny but it is generally worth a chuckle here and there. It definitely is not as good as it used to be, but after 14 years, very few shows are.

In terms of raw comedy I think the game grumps are the best, at worst they are mildly entertaining, at best they are some of the funniest stuff out there. I just watched their series on devils third and I cannot remember the last time I laughed as hard, some of their other greatest hits include punch out for wii (especially the bald bull episode), sonic unleased, and one of the cd-i zelda games. Those guys consistently put out funny content and it all just feels very natural.
