Movies Talk! Talkin' about movies!
Re: Movies Talk! Talkin' about movies!
So I just learned about a movie called the Irishman that is 3.5 hours long starring De Niro and Al Pacino and has a score of 7.9/10 on IMDB.

Yeah, it was Scorsese making a big splash on Netflix. Joe Pesci is also in it, which is notable because he retired from acting 20 years ago.

I thought Zatoichi was the main inspiration there.Ack wrote:Also, Lucas was heavily inspired by the likes of Akira Kurosawa and the chambara movies he had been exposed to. He almost couldn't NOT have a sword fight in the film after watching things like Yojimbo and Seven Samurai.
Damn, I really miss Kung Fu HD and Monsters HD. That's how I was exposed to Zatoichi for the first time.
For those that don't know, these channels showed movies from these respective genres and in glorious HD. If there were no HD master, they would get an old film remasters in 1080p. They would also show documentaries for these genres. There were no commercials. In between movies you would see a few ads for other movies/shows that the channel would be airing, but there were no outside advertising of any kind. If you are any kind of movie enthusiasts, these channels were a wet dream.
If the Voom Network came back in the form of a digital streaming subscription service, I would sign up in a heartbeat. Just take a look at the list of channels in that link and tell me that wouldn't be an awesome streaming service.

It might have been more specifically the Zatoichi films and work of Shintaro Katsu, but I've usually seen his experience with Japanese cinema glossed over to a general exposure with specific names highlighted. Still, if what he was aware of was only Kurosawa and Katsu, it's a hell of an education!

I actually have a Seven Samurai tattoo

I don't know what is Zatoichi but a look up youtube showed me a video called Zatoichi's 1st Showdown, its surprising how realistic it looks without the sound effects of "woosh" and "swoosh" and the sound effect of the stab. Also , no background music to create build up and no 10 min fight scene
which is probably how a real sword fight would end up being.

I should recommend my favourite samurai film called Shura, or Demons. It's a deconstruction of the genre. It does the standard samurai revenge plot, but if you think about it, the plots in samurai films can actually be so brutal. This emphasizes the brutality of it especially by showing tons of gore and all in slow mo. It's at the point where I'd call it a horror film.

Since a lot of members here seem to watch obscure movies I figured I would ask,
There is this movie that I saw clips from a long time ago, the actors were asian looking and there was a small boy or a girl that was accompanies by an older man that dressed like Charlie Chaplin. There is a part in the movie where they go to a fair and other kids throw cake at them older man. This movie is not earlier than mid-90s but was in color and I don't know the country of production but I am guessing its asian maybe Chinese or Japanese.
