Yeah I am unaware of disaster movies were a thing in the 50s, I just learned this now. I am pretty much clueless about anything pre-80s. I heard about monster movies and 3D but not disaster ones. I find movies pre-80s to be too slow in pace and too dry/serious, I guess that type of "formula" was exciting compared to the pace of life back then. I was surprised how dull Jaws was for me(I just watched for the first time).

Then again, I found ones that are quite entertaining like Lawrence of Arabia, Gone with The Wind, and Mary Poppins. So I can't make up my mind on them.

" Which references Kevin Costner's Robin Hood, he was heavily criticized for not speaking with an English accent.

I didn't know Men in Tights was a popular title, I thought it was this cheapo obscure B-Movie that I stumbled upon when I was a kid that only I remember. I didn't figure out why the princess was wearing a metal underwear and why the antagonist was trying to break it until I became an adult. I thought the funny part was "An underwear made out of metal...hahaha"

It was big because of the Kevin Costner film, I think, which was huge at the box office. Cary Elwes was "the guy that played in that one movie", and dave chappelle was just a budding stand up guy on comedy central. They didnt sell the movie, the popularity of the other movie did.

Was it big? I remember watching it back in the day and loving it, but I was a kid still. From what I understand, though, it was never particularly well received.

The Kevin Costner Robin Hood was largely lambasted by critics, but my understanding is that it did well at the box office, and Costner's lack of accent aside, I think it's a perfectly fine film. I love Rickman as Nottingham, and all the other characters are cast well. Heck, the orchestral soundtrack is fantastic, and Morgan Creek films even adopted a bit of it for their movie intro logo.

I just did a quick Wikipedia lookup, and it seems the film made 390 million dollars on a budget of 48 million. That's a pretty huge success.

I meant Men in Tights, the antecedent of "big." I know Prince of Thieves was huge, but Men in Tights was not.

For the record, I don't mind Prince of Thieves and I don't care about Costner's lack of an English accent. I was referencing that line because he breaks the fourth wall, is all. But I do find the joke hilarious, being that Costner was heavily criticized for it.

I just saw Prince of Thieves for the first time last year. It's not great, but it was a lot of fun. I'm glad I waited to see it because I would have thought I was too cool for it back in 1991.

Men in Tights did okay, but wasn't particularly big. It made almost 36 million on a 20 million budget, so that's close to a wash after the theaters and marketing people get paid. I'm sure it's made money on cable all these years.

$390M is smashing success even by today's standards, I don't think it can go much higher for the year 1991. I wonder if that is adjusted to inflation. This led me to see top grossing films of 1991 and Hot Shots was at #9, now I know why they invest in spoof films. Also, Hook was #4, I thought it was a tv movie that didn't turn out as well as expected(didn't see).

Speaking of spoof films, I usually hate silly and extra cheesy comedy like Leslie Nielsen and Steve Carrell. Its too much for me I find it irritating and akin of elementary kids jokes, but Kung Pow was on another level that movie is impossibly funny. I was surprised that Steve Oedekerk was not mainly an actor. TBH, I thought it was Steve Carrell in that movie, I haven't seen it in a long time and I am really bad with faces.
