Just wanted to gauge the reaction to this game now it's been released on Steam. I wanted to get into it right off the bat but never had the courage to sump up the time or money for it. Now that it's been released on Steam, the money part isn't such a problem, but my time is even more valuable with my uni exams coming up.
I can't stand the idea of monthly payments for WoW but enjoyed my time on the hacked servers when I played that. Is this the best of both worlds?

Re: Guild Wars on Steam
It is best described as a fantasy Phantasy Star Online. But if you dont like PvP scrimages the game is only soso. The PvE part, while huge and enjoyable with a party of real people, is often considered second teir to the PvP action.
Re: Guild Wars on Steam
Guild Wars is simply a better video game than WoW, monthly fees or not. We've had threads in the past, so I'll just say, if you enjoyed PSO's structure, GW is just like it, but far more polished. Massive worlds, beautiful graphics and art style, runs on even my lowly laptop, all soundtracks by Jeremy fucking Soule.
Don't bother with the individual games on Steam. Very overpriced. The trilogy pack is pretty fair, but gogamer had it on sale for $37 instead of $50, so watch out for that. The remaining game, Eye of the North can frequently be found for $10-15. Don't underestimate the retail versions. They're quite nice. Color manuals, a quicksheet, and other stuff like free trial codes for this and other games. And once installed, you can just backup your gw.dat file, which is an archive of the entire game, so you don't have to reinstall off the discs again.

Sorry for the repost then Moz, my main aim of the post was to inform people of it's addition to Steam, but my writing got sidetracked as I was going to more personal feelings.

GW will be 4 years old in a week. Here's how they're celebrating:

Be sure to order a free storage pane. I just did. Nice having a permanent addition to the storage. They cost $10 normally, and you can only claim your free one before May 31st.

Hehe, been a member for nearly 4 years and I have so many minis now it's silly.
GW is worth buying, but not from the Steam store, it's overpriced, but it's also overpriced on the NCSoft store so it's probably not Valve's fault.
The soundtrack is awesome, so if you get the chance to get the collector's editions it's definitely worth it for the additional soundtrack CDs you get with these editions of the game. Sometimes they are even cheaper. I've seen nightfall collectors edition (the huge box one) for less than £20. I paid £27 for it from play.com when it was on pre-order. I don't think I've paid more than £60 for all my GW games, that's a hell of a lot of gaming for the money when you think about it. Especially considering I've got them all within a few weeks of them being released. The only one I haven't got is the EOTN expansion which I may get someday if I start to play the game a bit more again.

Re: Guild Wars on Steam
If you play it often I suggest making a second shortcut and adding -image to the short cut line after the second ". Start this up then go to bed/work. It takes a couple hours but itll download all of the maps in the game. Your load times will plummet.
I figured its been four years - time to get that discovered land over 80%...
