If any one here is using Orbi RBK50 and is not happy with the performance I have tested for a couple of days a modified firmware called Voxel made by some guy. Everything seems to be improved on performance wise and connection is a lot more stable. YMMV and use at your own risk. There are also versions for Netgear R7800 and R9000 but I haven't tested those.Link.

Warning: once installed do not reset firmware to factory settings. I believe you can revert to stock firmware by just downloading it off Netgear website and installing it again.

I have been following tech. news for about over 2 decades now and I am tired of it. There is always that promise that the next big thing in technology is coming to make your life the best that you could dream of, once that tech comes along people look for the next big thing like a carrot and stick thing. I decided to maximise my enjoyment of whatever tech. is available now and not wait for the next big thing.

Although there were those big jumps that made huge difference: Floppy->CDs, CD->DVDs, Dialup->DSL, HDD->SSD, Wired->Wifi

I have 100Mbps connection but using the internet I noticed that almost all services will not utilize the full speed, different services will download at 15-20-40Mbps. Is this how the internet works or am I missing something? I thought downloads/service will use your connection to the max.

Well, depending how far you are from the services, they may have to hop through other providers. There's also overhead on data packets. Further, your own network and devices may be imposing speed bumps. Those are just a few of the potential factors involved. Basically, your max download speed is only what you should get under absolutely perfect conditions, internally and externally.

Also, your target service might have a maximum bandwidth less than your possible bandwidth. To use a simple example, if you're trying to FTP a file from a host that has 10 mb/s up then you'll never get it any faster no matter how large your down speed is.

While it's more likely to be a limitation on the other end or the network in-between, some apps or services do have settings to govern maximum speed. IE, Netflix has a quality setting, Steam at least has the option to limit download speeds, and so on. So, if something is particularly on the low end, it may be worth checking to see if maybe it's abiding by a lower setting that maybe made sense back when your internet was slower.

I think this might be it I wonder if a lot of the popular services have that sort of limit, for example I know InternetArchives has a slow server.
