Movies Talk! Talkin' about movies!
Re: Movies Talk! Talkin' about movies!
I think we are past the time where a big name actor is going to sell the movie, I don't think many people will go to watch a movie because actor "X" is in it. People seem to rely on word of mouth through social media channels much more now.

Nope, we’re definitely not past that for the general movie-viewing public. The Rock, Tom Cruise, and Hugh Jackman still sell tickets by their visage alone. What makes you think we’re beyond that?

Maybe. Traditionally, a lot of movie spend has been on big-name talent, and I think associating a popular actress or actor with a movie still lends the movie some legitimacy that translates to sales. Increasingly, however, I think associating a movie with a known character or franchise is the better way to make money (and, also, why you don’t see as many original concepts in big budget films).

Yeah, Full Moon announced it back around the start of April. I was surprised it took them that long.
It will probably still be better than the Thai horror comedy SARS WARS.

I don't have the numbers but back in the 80s and 90s actors had a cult following of some sort, they would take out actor posters and hang them in their rooms. I just don't see that kind of thing in the modern day. Bruce Willis, Robin Williams, Al Pacino could really sell the movie. I do not see any association between the movie's financial success and any one actor. If the movie is good people will see it, if its bad no one will pay for it. I also noticed that people are more willing to pick up on no name actor films so long as the movie is good, like The Platform or Oscar winner Parasite and neglect a bad movie even if has big name actors in it. In comparison with music, musician/artist still maintain their popularity and loyal fan following.marurun wrote:Nope, we’re definitely not past that for the general movie-viewing public. You make a good argument about The Rock, but I guess he is one of the few actors remaining that -could- sell a movie. I consider him a modern day Steval Segal/VanDam and his movie's success is tied to franchises like Jumanji, Rampage, F&F, GI Joe, Hercules, The Mummy. He also does terrible movies like Doom, and Baywatch from what I hear.
I guess you are right, we have had multiple Batmans already and they all seem to sell well. We also had multiple Spidermans.prfsnl_gmr wrote:Increasingly, however, I think associating a movie with a known character or franchise is the better way to make money (and, also, why you don’t see as many original concepts in big budget films).

I love quirky films like these from the 80s/90s. The posters were major selling point of a movie and it just takes me back to video rental store days. Not sure if others find these as specific category of films with a fanbase or its just nostalgia for me. I have learned that the actor David Paul has recently passed away. They have another film that I am trying to hunt down titled "Twin Sitters", its not available on iTunes but someone uploaded it on YouTube.

The cover reminds me of this one list I've found: https://letterboxd.com/jlalibs/list/80s ... the-cheap/
The posters for these are just phenomenal. I watched American Hunter because it was there. An Indonesian action film starring Robert Mitchum's son who has no charm and does awkward martial arts. It's fantastic.

Yeah, I've seen about half of those...PretentiousHipster wrote:The cover reminds me of this one list I've found: https://letterboxd.com/jlalibs/list/80s ... the-cheap/

While you're going to find it's a very mixed bag of quality, I'd like to point you to one film in particular that made the cut because of where it's from: Ten Zan. It is a joint Italian/North Korean production. It's terrible, but the bizarre nature of its existence is why I sought it out.

Been watching alot of 80's 90's movies lately for nostalgia. Watched the og fright night last night and was like wtf when the mom offers her high school son a valium. That shit would not fly today lol. Then was watching a munsters episode and grandpa is making amphetamines in the basement. Different times.... CBS has been showing 80s movies on Sunday night. They probably have to screen the shit out of all of them for fear of offending somebody. The 80s were ruthless on PC
