PS2 on LCD

Post by scottykick »

So what is the quality of a Playstation 2 running on say a 46 inch LCD tv?

I didn't look too great on my 42", but I was only using s-video. You might get decent results with component cables, but the games will need to support 480p for a noticeable difference. Also, I believe using component cables makes PS1 games do weird things.

I just kept a good ol' CRT SDTV around myself for playing PS2.

Depends on the TV and the game I guess. I hated the way it looked on my old PC monitor, but it looks a bit better on my 37" Toshiba LCD. Both time it was hooked up via component.

I am about ready to put it back into the bedroom's 32" CRT SDTV. ICO and Shadow of the Colossus both looked like complete ass on the LCD, while GT4 looked pretty good.

I think GT4 supports 1080i, one of the few games that does.

My older PS2 games looks like garbage on my 42" LCD. Nonprogressive games don't display properly when hooked up with component cables. They have a chopped up look to them. I use S-video as it helps to soften the jaggy issue on LCDs. Although, I see a older CRT in my near future.

The only real solution is to have two PS2's one for HD games and one for SD games. Considering that new ones are $99 and used ones are like 50-60 bucks at most places it's not that hard to buy a second.

Also Shadow Of the Collussus runs in HD and 16:9 but you have to select it in the options menu.

I've got my PS2 running on my 50" Plasma over S-video and I think it looks fine. Maybe I just have lower standards that most forum members.

Not that much better really, but considering the headache hooking up to vga sounds like it would be it's the best picture you'll get easily. Some games even run using software rendering at less than 480i and are upscaled so your picture on those will come out pre-interpolated and look really terrible. Looks like the console does this itself before sending the picture through the cable. Most LCDs have options to tweak the picture so you can still fix it up a bit. At least you don't get NTSC artifacting screwing up your reds and greens.
