PCSX2: emulating the playstation 2

Post by J T »

http://www.pcsx2.net/

Is anybody running this thing? I would like to be able to play my PS2 discs on my laptop since we are a one TV household and my videogames often end up in a battle with my wife's soap operas. I've been thinking about trying it out, but I don't want to futz up my nice new laptop if the emulator doesn't work so hot.

Is it real glitchy? Does it play off the discs well? Is it easy to get started or do I have to download a bajillion patches and plugins? Is it good now or should I wait until it's better developed?

You gotta have two TVs in the house. It's a must for stable marriage. I'd go crazy if I couldn't play something while my wife is watching The Hills.

The only place to put a second TV would be in the bedroom and there are statistics that show that couples that have a TV in the bedroom have less sex than couples that don't. So, as much as I like videogames, I don't want a TV in the bedroom.

If I remember correctly, ps2 emulation, like most emulation, is heavily processor dependent. I have a q6600 and a geforce 9600gt and it runs several PS2 games ok with no optimization - I have not delved into it deeply since there are few PS2 games I really want. I did little in the way of patching and playing with the plugins, but if I remember correctly it is not much more complicated than using epsxe.

If you want to see something impressive with the emulator it is this:

Thats right boys and girls, the first time ever that emulator and console players are playing on the same official server.

I have a 1.8Ghz 64-bit machine (with 1.5GB of RAM and on Ubuntu 8.10), and most 2D only games (both Disgaea games, for example) and a few random 3D games (Klonoa 2 and Dark Cloud are the only ones I've tried) work at playable speeds... but this took about 6 hours of playing about with plugins, so your mileage may vary.

In short- like most plugin-based emulators, you'll be able to make stuff playable if you have the free time to make it so.

Wow last night I was just thinking of making this exact same topic...

I still say PS2 and Gamecube emulation isn't a substitute as of yet. It's just not there.

It's certainly not perfect, but i use it occasionally for mushihimesama. It does pretty well with that :)

My next machine will be i7 based and hopefully will have better luck in running it because my current 1.86 C2D/8800GT cries while trying to play it. I have uninstalled it for now.

I know it will eventually get there, hell Saturn took long enough to emulate properly and it eventually got there.

Going i7 didn't improve things much for me. These emulators don't really make use of 4 cores / 8 threads.
