Questions about 8bitdo's Sn30 / Pro / + Controllers

Post by Ziggy »

In short, I'm thinking about getting either the Sn30 Pro or the Sn30 Pro + to use with the Switch for use with certain games. I'm thinking it might be more comfortable for 2D side scrolling retro style games such as...

Mega Man 11
Ninja Saviors
New Super Mario Bros U
Donkey Kong Country Tropical Freeze
Et Cetera

Right, I have the official Nintendo Switch Pro Controller. And it's alright for games such as the above. But I feel like a SNES controller would be more comfortable.

I do have the 8Bitdo Sn30 with the dongle to use it on my SNES Classic, and I love it. The Sn30 Pro though adds those thumbsticks which offsets the D-Pad and face buttons. Does that make it more or less comfortable than a real SNES controller? Then the Sn30 Pro + adds the grips and also adds analog shoulder buttons (which the Switch does not utilize in any way). It looks like the grips would make it a little more comfortable for using the thumbsticks. But again, I would want this for games that don't use the sticks.

I also see the official Nintendo SNES Switch controller, which is even a bit cheaper and looks like it would be perfect for me, but it's been out of stock for a while. Should I just wait for this to come back in stock?

I can only speak for the N30 Pro 2, but I had no trouble pairing it to my nephew's switch for some 3-player action. The shifted positions of the digital controls feel perfectly natural to me, and don't affect gameplay in any way. There's exactly enough space between the digital and analog bits that they don't interfere with each other - my thumbs can barely graze the edges of the analog nubs but don't move them when doing mmx air dashes and the like. I mainly use it on my Android devices, but I like that I can pair it with other consoles easily, and the size makes it so portable. I'd say it's worth the extra cash for the multi-console compatibility.

I've heard very bad things about their d-pads. When i ask (in many places) i get lots of people saying they are perfect (fixed now) and lots of people saying they are still very inconsistent.

I really wanted to buy a Pro+ for my emulation box, but the only good deals are from China, so i passed based on price. I didn't want to pay the price they cost and end up with a shit d-pad that i would have a hard time returning.

Ended up just buying a DS4 which has been perfect for just about every system i emulate (up to GC/PS2). Having the least amount of lag of any wireless (and most wired) controllers doesn't hurt either.
