I'm looking for some genre critics of the '90s. There have been game designers strongly opposed to both FPS and RPG genre - advocates of exclusive markets, redefining principles, etc - and their interviews/devblogs are all lost. I'm looking to see if anyone has any references; physical or archived.
None of the current textbooks dig into foundational oppositions so to track anything off of them. The last time I saw any interviews regarding genre criticism it was a scanned version of an old magazine online. (unfortunately I can't remember the interviewee's name. irrc he was over 60 at the time.)
I also made a request on the related Wikipedia page (Role-Playing video game). Please feel free to contribute.
Critiques of the RPG genre
Re: Critiques of the RPG genre
Suggestions have been made that the following magazines might've had such interviews but it remains to be seen: Edge, The Games Machine and Computer and Video Games.
In case you have any sources, please share in this thread.

Re: Critiques of the RPG genre
Are you looking for "professional" articles on the genre or just random opinions? I would be happy to gripe about RPG's if you need a random but I don't know of any articles that discuss the subject
Re: Critiques of the RPG genre
I'm looking for references to old devblogs/interviews in which game designers have discussed against the principles of the RPG genre. I've recently lost a collection of interviews I had preserved years ago, most of which is nowhere to be found online anymore (including web archiving services).pook99 wrote:Are you looking for "professional" articles on the genre or just random opinions? Your thoughts regarding structure are also welcome. Please create a new thread to share them, if you deem necessary.
