Who cares about the tier charts? That's just no fun. Play as the characters you like, get good at them, and beat your friends consistently with them. I could dominate my friends and their friends 3/4 of the rounds with Ganondorf in Melee, and he isn't considered top tier. He's actually middle of the road, apparently. He's slow as fuck. I just got good with him with practice.

Moz is right on this one. The videos on-line are of players who are considered the top tier skill-wise. You're unlikely to play anyone like them in real life, and anyone you do face in real life can probably be whomped soundly if you learn the quirks of the characters you like. Play for fun. There's nothing stopping you from succeeding with the character you want to win with.

Well, sure, I do play for fun with my friends, but your telling me you guys don't have at least one friend who will always play as the top-tier, high-priority characters and consistently whoop ass until it isn't fun anymore?

Shit seems to happen constantly at my shin-digs. Then a real fight breaks out, or at least a huge shouting match.

I play with the difficulty maxed out. It definitely is noticeable, when I come across a team of beam characters, their are balancing issues. "wow. Round 2 and I barely made it through with each of my characters. Round 5 I cleared in under 30 seconds". It doesn't bug me too much, cause I enjoy the challenge. However, when I play a game like Guilty Gear X, where their is a more apparent balance, it gives the game an overall more elegant feel.

Ouch, if that's true, I play the absolute worst character in Smash Bros.(Link), a low tier character in SSBM(Young Link), and the highest tiered character possible in SSBB(Meta Knight).

I've always felt indifferent to the tier list. I do play certain characters a lot, like my automatic preference for Chun Li in anything Street Fighter related. Still, sometimes it's a lot of fun to go for someone I've hardly ever played. Every now and again I'll get a good laugh out of the tiers, like when I found out what Kula was generally ranked in King of Fighters. But I don't think a person should rely on that if they've no interest in playing tournaments. I'm good enough in most fighters to beat the majority of people I know without having to spend time analyzing every detail and memorizing every move set or pattern. I know a couple of tournament players that do, but in general I avoid tournaments, partly because I don't have the time to dedicate to that kind of thing(the other main reason being that many tournament players are dicks. Not all, but enough that I'd really rather just not join in).

To both of you, if it was really that simple why has the game persisted so long in fighting game tournaments? The top tier players shouldn't be so easily impressed with flashy baubles.

I believe the property also has a lot to do with it. I mean, come on, how many characters from one of the greatest video game and one of the greatest comics companies ever ended up in here? That many? Awesome! Plus, some folks really love the fast paced action.

But tournament players also play to win, so they favor the characters that they feel will make them win.
