Texas Instruments TI-99

Post by dsheinem »

I recently discovered there was an emulator and lots of roms available for the first real gaming system I ever had as a kid (before I got my Atari). I used to play Parsec, Hopper, MunchMan, Car Wars, and Connect Four for hours. I also used to do some BASIC programming with it. I fondly remember typing for hours - often copying BASIC code from the back of a magazine (like the 3-2-1 Contact Magazine) and ending up with a few dots moving around the screen and beeping. I thought it was awesome. Anyway, here's some good stuff I found:

The Classic99 Emulator with 10 or so built in games:

Lots of additional ROMS:
http://zx81.zx81.free.fr/public/psp/psp ... 9-roms.rar

More info:

Any other former (or current?!) TI-99 users?

Latest I had was TI-89 (I believe). I remember playing Street Fighter, Dope Wars and Dragon Quest in high school.

Edit: Oh wait, TI-99 is a completely different beast from the TI-89. Oh well.

There is an emulator for one of the TI calculators for DS :) Although this is not what the thread is about it seems.

Back in highschool I used to program on the TI-85 calculator. I made a black jack game that had graphics and everything. I made a sexy card dealer woman. I even made a cheat code where you could start with one million dollars and there would be a graphic of a smiley face with dollar signs for eyes. It spread around the highschool reasonably quickly because I had people offer to give me a copy of the game, not knowing that I was the one that made it.

I also made some nice mathematical function programs like one that would if you gave it any 3 pieces of a triangle (side lengths or angles) it could calculate all of the other side lengths and angles for you autimatically, along with the area.

I haven't done any programming in years though, unless you count the syntax code in statistics programs like SPSS.

This thread is being hijacked by calculator aficionados!

Here's what I am referring to:

I'm with you dsheinem. Munch man and Parsec ruled. I wasn't lucky enough to have a disk drive, so I saved my programs with a good ol tape recorder. And we had that beautiful modem, where you actually took your phone and shoved it into the coupler. You can't imagine how I crapped my pants when I upgraded to a commodore 64.

I feel like going into a "you kids don't appreciate what you've got!" speech right about now.

Ugh--brings back bittersweet memories. Back in what I believe was the 7h or 8th grade I remade Quest for Glory on a TI-89, complete with painstakingly created graphics interface and all, only to have the calculator stolen.

I think that was my last attempt at game development.

And now we're back to the damn calculators... dammit, doesn't anyone want to talk about listening to your computer read code through your TV speaker? Good times, I swear!!
