Re: Just how bad was the Gamecube?
I like the Gamecube -- it's a great system. It had a solid amount of great titles from not just Nintendo..
It also had solid ports of some Dreamcast classics and some great content from other devs like Capcom, SEGA.. I don't get why all the hate.. It had great graphics, very little loading, and was the most reliable console of last-gen compared to PS2, Xbox..

No shit, that's absolute crazy talk. I bought Geist just a few months ago for $4, and it's not worth much more than that. It's totally mediocre. It had original ideas, but the graphics are extremely uneven, there's a lot of audio problems, frame rate isn't very solid, the controls are bad even as far as console FPS are concerned, and the last boss just made me permanently give up, because the story's conclusion wasn't worth the suffering the fucker caused me. At times it kind of seems to just be imitating TimeSplitters' visual style, but failing. It's still decent though. Need to really try the multiplayer.Flak Beard wrote:Ok now, let's not step into the realm of irrationality just because we want to sound cool. I've heard a lot of dumb things from the Halo-Hate Bandwagon, but Geist being better is a first.Dreamstation wrote:Geist > Halo

Just how I was raised honestly. I felt like I would be more an adult if I owned black electronic equipment. That was all I wanted to be back then, was an adult, now I'm less than 3 years from being one and I really wish I was 8 or 9 again...
You know you could get a black Gamecube from launch, right?

Exactly.Mozgus wrote:Screw this noise. Gamecube is a much better looking console than N64 or SNES. I love how compact this machine was. I love the whole "Cube" concept. There's nothing wrong with a console looking less like a high tech appliance, and more like a toy. Games are toys. I personally hate the way Wii ripped off the whole milky white, sleek iPod style.superlarz wrote:Gamewise, the Cube wasnt a failure. Saleswise i think it did ok, even with the Halo-nuts and "cool" crowd going with Xbox. I think the Cube was a failure in terms of style. Others have mentioned the whole purple thing, which definately contributes, but the shape and name of the system also contribute. N64 is fondly remembered, even though it probably had less "good games." Why? they system is sleek, and also people tend to have fond memories of catridges. Wii is also a nice looking system. Gamecube stands out like a sore thumb and looks like a preschoolers playtoy. When people, like Nintendo execs, say it was a failure, this is what I think they mean. It was just a bad, poorly executed idea. Its a failure because of what could have been
They werent going to beat PS2 because of the DVD transition, but imagine how much more successful it would have been the system had a good design. It would have been awesome.
As far as I'm concerned, NES and Gamecube are the best looking systems Nintendo has ever offered. Why couldn't more consoles completely consume cartridges the way NES did? I love that. The cart goes in, locks down, and a lid closes. I really did feel like I was playing with power. That power was hungry for my games. I don't know why all the other systems insisted on leaving the cartridge exposed some random amount, just so it will collect dust.
And purple is my favorite color.
The sleek hard lines mixed with the classy sense of style and personality that the box exuded. Heck the guys at Nintendo even made fun of themselves by adding the second start-up screen with the little kids laughing when you hold down Z as you turn it on. They knew that the box would be ridiculed for it's major differences in style and shape but just ignored all the crap and focused on what was really important GAMES. Not DVD playback not the 18-24 yr. old nerd moneywasters, and not the brainless masses. They simply tried to be themselves, plain crazy wacky Nintendo.

I think in the future, the Gamecube might have a difficult time with retro appeal. Despite a solid library of 1st-party games, the cube just does not have as much going for it. 3D graphics in general are never going to age as well as the 2D ones.
Re: Just how bad was the Gamecube?
Man I am very surprised and happy to hear so many positive comments about the Game Cube. I love the shape, the size, and the controller - I feel that the controller was different and took a while to get used to, but Nintendo wasn't alone in that. Everyone was upgrading their controller layout and everyone had to get used to the new look and feel no matter what console. Personally, I feel like the Cube's controller is the most comfortable I have used. I do have the dark Game Cube, but I honestly never cared about the color, it's just the one they had in stock at the time I bought it.
I think the only people I have heard negative comments from in regards to the Game Cube are those people who got into gaming when the Playstation and the X-box came out. These people had never owned a console before and hated the NES and SNES because they were sssooo primitive - mostly because they were too young to have ever owned one of these older systems. So suddenly they are hardcore gamers because they went out and bought one of these new, non-Nintendo systems, and they have to justify their decision while hiding the fact that they have no idea what they are talking about. Hehe... it seems that these same people still know nothing about gaming (even on their own system) as all they play or talk about is Halo, Grand Theft Auto, Rock Band, or Guitar Hero. Bring up Super Mario Bros. or Zelda on the NES or even Sonic on the Genesis and prepare for an earful - it's like arguing with a religious fanatic or a republican.
