I like my black gamecube. It isnt any better than the others or worse imo. Just different.

Screw this noise. Gamecube is a much better looking console than N64 or SNES. I love how compact this machine was. I love the whole "Cube" concept. There's nothing wrong with a console looking less like a high tech appliance, and more like a toy. Games are toys. I personally hate the way Wii ripped off the whole milky white, sleek iPod style.superlarz wrote:Gamewise, the Cube wasnt a failure. Saleswise i think it did ok, even with the Halo-nuts and "cool" crowd going with Xbox. I think the Cube was a failure in terms of style. Others have mentioned the whole purple thing, which definately contributes, but the shape and name of the system also contribute. N64 is fondly remembered, even though it probably had less "good games." Why? they system is sleek, and also people tend to have fond memories of catridges. Wii is also a nice looking system. Gamecube stands out like a sore thumb and looks like a preschoolers playtoy. When people, like Nintendo execs, say it was a failure, this is what I think they mean. It was just a bad, poorly executed idea. Its a failure because of what could have been
They werent going to beat PS2 because of the DVD transition, but imagine how much more successful it would have been the system had a good design. It would have been awesome.
As far as I'm concerned, NES and Gamecube are the best looking systems Nintendo has ever offered. Why couldn't more consoles completely consume cartridges the way NES did? I love that. The cart goes in, locks down, and a lid closes. I really did feel like I was playing with power. That power was hungry for my games. I don't know why all the other systems insisted on leaving the cartridge exposed some random amount, just so it will collect dust.
And purple is my favorite color.
Re: Just how bad was the Gamecube?
I love both of my Cubes, my purple import box, and my black home console. I wish my collection was bigger. In my opinion the cube is the winner of the last generation. Just like the N64 last generation, the cube was made by its 1st party games. I'm not going to list off the games as it's been done before, but needless to say they were very good.
I'm sorry I'm not being very eloquent about the cube, I'm watching family guy...

My observations were not my personal opinion, just the way I think the general public looked at it. Personally, I dont like the purple Gamecube, but I think the silver and black ones look nice. I dont really like the SNES look either. I do like the way n64 looks though. I am just giving my opinion on why the Gamecube is considered a failure by most, even though sales and profits were good.Mozgus wrote:Screw this noise. I think black gamecubes are amoungst the sexxiest of game consoles only overshadowed by the PS3. I honestly think color did have something to do with it because most of their fanbase was now way over 10 and probably wanted something more adult. I know I did, thats why I ended up with a PS2.

Re: Just how bad was it?
Amen to that. I love my PSX and PS2, but Sony's general hardware reliability sucks compared to Nintendo. Particularly in regard to anything to do with optical drives.Mozgus wrote:I also loved how Gamecube didn't demonstrate the aliasing issues PS2 had. Load times were almost always better on gamecube. The system was far more reliable than the other two.
Subjectively speaking I also think the visual quality of what the GCN spat out was far better than the PS2. Not that it means anything (the games make the system, not the hardware).
I missed the whole GCN era first time around. I only bought one about a year back (and a PS2 a year before that), so I'm looking forward to building a library of games and seeing what was out there for the console.

But weren't you like 8 years old when Gamecube launched? Why would the sight of a dark purple (not even light purple) console embarrass you at that age?RyaNtheSlayA wrote:I think black gamecubes are amoungst the sexxiest of game consoles only overshadowed by the PS3. I'm thinking back and I still don't recall ever being teased for what console I chose over the years. I never even knew fanboy wars existed until I got the internet. None of us kids teased each other over such stupid crap. Maybe once or twice people would ask me why I got a gamecube (some frat boy types) in a serious tone, and I had no trouble educating them of the benefits.

Re: Just how bad was the Gamecube?
Just how I was raised honestly. I felt like I would be more an adult if I owned black electronic equipment. That was all I wanted to be back then, was an adult, now I'm less than 3 years from being one and I really wish I was 8 or 9 again...Mozgus wrote:But weren't you like 8 years old when Gamecube launched? Ok now, let's not step into the realm of irrationality just because we want to sound cool. I've heard a lot of dumb things from the Halo-Hate Bandwagon, but Geist being better is a first.Dreamstation wrote:Geist > Halo
