The first movie did have a distinct lack of Tim Curry which the sequel rectified.

Recently watched Doctor Mordrid, a film from Full Moon (of Puppet Master and Evil Bong fame) that started life as a Doctor Strange adaptation. But after losing the rights they reimagined this decent fantasy film into an original IP. Kinda want a sequel.

That... actually... looks better than I would have expected.

I ended up seeing Jojo Rabbit over the weekend. I still don't know how I feel about it. It was funny when it was supposed to be and serious when it was supposed to be, but the swerves between the two were super hard. If you compare it to Dr. Strangelove, the latter is funny because of the absurdity of the situation; everyone in the movie is playing things pretty much straight. In Jojo Rabbit you have that sort of "man, what the fuck were they thinking?" comedy, but then every now and then the movie has to remind you that yeah, it's fucking Germany in the closing months of World War II.

I will say that Scarlett Johansson has an amazing scene midway through the movie where she shows some amazing acting skills.

I finally watched midsommar last night. It's a beautifully shot movie... which I absolutely hated.

Image
Midsommar is incredibly well made from a standpoint of production values, artistry, cinematography, and sound design. Every shot is a painting. Every sound the audience hears is intentional. The young cast of actors are all believable in their roles. Ari Aster is without question a brilliant film maker.

I'm having a hard time putting into words exactly what I hated about this movie. I guess it's... thematically disgusting. Suicide is used for shock value over and over again. All rural people are secretly violent cultists. A person with birth defects is dehumanized. Mental illness is romanticized. Anyone who tries to establish personal boundaries with a mentally ill person must be awful.

Each and every scene in this film is a triumph of cinematic arts buried under twelve tons of cognitive dissonance.

Midsommar is the most beautifully made piece of garbage I've ever seen. Thanks, I hate it.
