Assassin's Creed IV questions

Post by opa »

I heard Assassin's Creed IV is a really good pirate-y themed sailing game if you ignore the main story. I'm not the biggest fan of the AC games but I would like something new to play. I've kind of grown a little tired of the Sid Meier's Pirates! remake on PSP.

My questions are: how much pirating can I do in the game? Is it a lot or is it just a minuscule amount of filler content?
Also, what would be a good version to check out? I'm looking at 360/Ps3 and Wii U. I'm assuming the Wii U would look a lot nicer and maybe have more features.

Any of y'all have experience with this game? Much obliged for any info/help!

I haven't played IV yet, but have been planning to get it for the same reason - to just sandbox. I'm planning on grabbing it on Wii U... it has off-TV play, which is a good selling point for that version. You can run around pirating while listening to Netflix.

Unless they later fixed it in patches, the Wii U version turns in the worst performance, even compared to the PS3/360 ones. https://www.eurogamer.net/articles/digi ... n-face-off

Assassin’s Creed IV is a fantastic game that really stands a notch above the rest in the series (though the two most recent AC games are excellent too...). In any case, there is a fair amount of sailing/taking over and battling other ships/swashbuckling/treasure hunting/etc. to get into without having to do the main story...but the main story is quite good and worth playing through to earn xp, etc. and expand what you can do when sandboxing. It is very pirate-centric in its own right and the larger AC/Animus stuff is really very minimal.

Thanks for the info, dsh. Sounds like a good experience.

Thanks for the article, isiolia. After reading I did a quick search but couldn't find if the patch on Wii U did anything.

I'm gonna try to check GameStop today. I think I'll go for the PS3 or 360 versions (whichever they have). $3-5 is well within my "take a chance" budget.

By my grog this game's awesome! I'm to the point of upgrading my ship and the game feels like it is really opening up. The only thing I don't like is the meta-game animus/A.I./virtual reality aspect. Now my only previous experience with Assassin's Creed is an hour of play time on the Vita title. I'm assuming the other games went into detail about what the heck this virtual reality perspective is all about (the game is a game within a game?). How many fourth walls did they knock down with this perspective? Maybe AC IV will go into this more but I sincerely hope not. The pirating aspect is really enthralling and being taken out of that to mill about and talk to Starbucks-marxist-looking digital nerds is a waste of gameplay when you could be swashbuckling/causing general havoc.

The series as a whole is about the conflict between Assassins and Templars through the ages. The Animus, generally, allows someone to live through the experiences of their ancestors. Usually to figure out key information from the past. The initial rationale of making a game is, I think, just something ACIV does as part of the plot.

Assassin's Creed IV is the series only good use of the modern day Animus setting in my opinion. The rest of the time the Animus was used as a contrived excuse to set the series in the past to begin with (a mechanism I believe is only there because the to link those events to the buying audience of American teens) and then spiraled out of control into superpowered Popes and ancient aliens shit. The use of the Animus in ACIV to me seemed mostly satirical, used to poke fun at the series, the use of the future setting and from what I remember even Ubisoft itself.
