Genesis S-video Black and White

Post by Marspants »

Alright, so I finally finished the S-video mod from this site http://www-unix.ecs.umass.edu/~dhowland/mod/ and it works.... on certain TVs. My nice Flat CRT it looks very clear, but in black and white :( , where as my rounded CRT and LCD it looks good in S-video ( better then composite but I think it would look nicer on my other CRT).

Anyway, point is why would it work not on one TV, but the others? Is S-video like that? Did I screw the mod up? ( I suck at soldering but I assume if it works on one TV I did it right) Or maybe some form of other interference. I'm going to test it on some other TV's later to make sure it's not just this one.

I think it has to be just that tv, the amp you built should be powerful for any s-video input. Maybe check the color settings for that input, and try another console hooked up via s-video too on that same tv. Did you see the s-video mod I did?

Mine works perfectly on both of my flat crts, and my best friend's flat crt as well. Hope you get it working :D

I built this very amp and got the same result! You have one of your capacitors installed backwards (probably the luminance). Flip it and it should work fine!

Well the chroma is the color, not luminance, but if his cap is installed backwards then he wouldn't get color on any tv. Plus a cap will blow if it is installed backwards, so unless his genesis is smoking I seriously doubt that this is the problem.

I've tried different consoles and it's the only one that doesn't work, and some genesis games have slight tints of color as I've found out which seemed strange to me.
Also I skipped the Overclock because the Genesis I did the mod to didn't have the same chip for it, but had the right one for the S-video part.

fox099 are you sure that's what you did to fix it? Because the whole Genesis lighting into flames idea doesn't sound very friendly to me.

Thanks for the quick replys!

Not necessarily. It depends on the voltage and the capacitance, as well as the composition of the rest of the circuit.

Oh gotcha, I had just read so many tutorials where people warn about the supposedly extreme dangers of putting caps in backwards, I always triple checked all mine lol

Yeah, most tutorials emphasize that because that sort of thing can happen, and it's bad for all the surrounding electronics as well. It's better to overstate the problem than understate it.

If you want to try a much simpler circuit for the amp, I found this thread on smspower.org, 4th post down. I used this one on a Genesis I picked up at a thrift store and it worked great. I was going to post some pics, but haven't gotten around to it yet as I still need to drill some holes for my new ports to the genesis shell.

Alright so if the capacitor is in the wrong way which side should I switch? http://www-unix.ecs.umass.edu/~dhowland/mod/ He lables one a V and the other a G so if someone could point it out that would be awesome.

@obi-shawn I was actually thinking about doing that one because it seemed a lot easier, I might try it with another one of my Genesis in the future.

Edit: I just found out what the luminance side was, switch the cap and it still does the same thing :S It works on every TV but my nice one? Argg, It just doesn't seem to make any sense.
