Do you have a graphical "style" you really like?
Re: Do you have a graphical "style" you really like?
Oh yeah, Star Wars Arcade is awesome! Completely blank about it until last year when I think I watched a Cinemassacre (AVGN) vid. I did try out the major games for VirtualBoy a couple of years ago with that emulator and Red-Blue glasses from DealExtreme. All I've ever heard about the real thing is the display burns a headache into your brain like depicted in the movie Disturbing Behaviour (1998). I'd definitely get a headache from one if I got a chance...

I really like highly detailed pixelated games like you said. I also love games that are of a similar style to Shantae: Half Genie Hero.

I love Shantae: Half Genie Hero! What a gorgeous game! I'm all about that hand-drawn style.Mikey82 wrote:I really like highly detailed pixelated games like you said. I also love games that are of a similar style to Shantae: Half Genie Hero.

The Wonder Boy: Dragon's Trap remake and Monster Boy also really nail that.

I'm going to have to look these up sometime. I don't have a current gen platform. What are my options? Are they on GOG?Gunstar Green wrote:The Wonder Boy: Dragon's Trap remake and Monster Boy also really nail that.

The spritework in MM 2 amazed me as a kid and still sticks out in my mind as perfect examples of 8-bit art at its finest.prfsnl_gmr wrote:I always liked large, detailed, and colorful 8-bit sprites. The dragon boss in Mega Man 2 impresses me to this day.
If you like that kind of sprite you need to check out aggelos, its in PC and switch, it is a wonderboy style game that is absolutely amazing and all of the bosses bring back that same vibe, although they are probably more 16-bit than 8-bit.

Yep, the Dragon's Trap remake is already on GOG. The Monster Boy PC port is coming.samsonlonghair wrote:I'm going to have to look these up sometime. I don't have a current gen platform. Another one I thought of is that I like a lot of the realistic character models used in Japanese PS2 games. Like Silent Hill, Haunting Ground, some JRPGs of the time, etc.
I think it's nostalgia. A lot of those games were ones I was enamored with at the time despite not having a PS2.

I like the cell-shaded style Sega used for Jet Set Radio. Had lasting impact on the industry.
