Well I certainly know that the Saturn is the home console for shmups and I finally got my hands on a modded one thanks to these forums, but a lot of those imports are gonna put a burn in my wallet, lol.
The PSX/PS2 on the other hand seems to have affordable shooters, but I'm just not exactly sure what's out there. My only real preference is that I prefer the futuristic ones, other than that I enjoy almost any kind of shmup. Here's what I have on the two systems:
PS2
- Capcom Classics Collection Vol. 1 (I remember this having some in it)
- Gradius III and IV
- Gradius V (is it bad if I still can't beat this!? lol...)
- R-Type Final
- Raiden III
* Waiting for Thunder Force VI
PS1
- Einhander
- R-Types
- Thunder Force V
Huh, that's a lot less than I thought...
For now I'm just interested in domestic US releases. So hopefully there's a handful of ones out there I'm missing.
PSX/PS2 shmup recommendations?

PS1:
Raiden Project - near arcade perfect ports of Raiden 1 and 2, with the option to remix the music

Re: PSX/PS2 shmup recommendations?
I dunno if you do any importing, but two cool and extremely cheap PS2 shmups I've found in Japan are Homura and XII Stag.
Homura isn't futuristic, and it's only one player, but it's very well-done and stylish. You're a floating, ninja-like character who shoots green shit at enemies. You can also do a teleport attack where you flicker all around the screen killing everything, and you can use a sword to knock shots back at enemies.
XII Stag is sort of futuristic and has a crazy last level. If you wiggle the stick right and left your ship shoots sideways for extra points. An interesting scoring system indeed!
