I played a bit with my daughter, and yeah, it's a ton of fun. I wasn't a fan of Valkyrie no Bouken or Xandra no Daibouken: Valkyrie to no Deai (to put it lightly), so this middle entry seems to be the highlight of the series.pierrot wrote:I may not be your senpai, but I personally love the Valkyrie no Densetsu pickup. That game is legit. It's too bad it wasn't a Super CD game. Maybe it wouldn't have been quite so visually scaled back, and might have been able to better represent the majesty of the Underground Theme.

Re: Games Acquired 2019
Yeah, Valkyrie no Bouken isn't great. I needed a lot of outside help to finish that game, but I played Densetsu first, so I was a little more committed to it, to see more of the beginnings of the IP. Too bad about Whirlo. I haven't played it at all, but I was kind of hoping there wouldn't only be that one great game in the series.

Bomberman 64 N64 - £16.18
Custom Robo N64 -£5.49
Dōbutsu no Mori N64 - £12.67
Total: 22 games - £206.72
Unlike April, I actually bought quite a lot of games this month. But can you blame me? I was in Japan!
I've written the Japanese titles for all the games here, but here are some better known English titles for some:
Gyakuten Kenji 2 = Ace Attorney Investigations 2
Irodzuki Tingle no Koi no Balloon Trip = Ripened Tingle's Balloon Trip of Love
Ninja Ryukenden III = Ninja Gaiden III
Kirby No Kirakira Kizzu = Kirby Star Stacker
Dobutsu No Mori = Animal Crossing (64)
Also of note is that Bomberman 64 is a different game to the one we got here, it's sometimes known as Bomberman 64 Arcade.
Also, like Elkin, I also finished my Fire Emblem collection this month, as the DS one I picked up was the only one I needed! At least until Three Houses comes out in the summer!
Anyway, after a haul like that I plan to take it easy and focus on beating games for the next few months. I have too much to play to bother buying more for now!

Re: Games Acquired 2019
You might like Whirlo. We have very different taste in platformers. I didn't care for the jumping controls. There's like a regular jump, and then a super jump that needs to be "charged" to clear larger gaps and whatnot. Seemed annoying, though I admittedly haven't come close to finishing the game.pierrot wrote:Yeah, Valkyrie no Bouken isn't great. Now, you probably already know this, but there's also a Valkyrie no Boken remake on Namco Anthology 2 (Japanese PSX). Looks pretty neat.

As long as you're not going to tell me you like the platforming in Super Wagyan Land, or something, I don't think they're that different, but granted. Yeah, I may as well actually give it a shot at some point. It feels kind of weird that they bothered to put Xandra into the lead role of a game, though. I would have much preferred a side scrolling Valkyrie game, but oh well.BoneSnapDeez wrote:You might like Whirlo. We have very different taste in platformers. I didn't care for the jumping controls. I'm-- not sure that I did know about this. Not exactly inexpensive, though, and it seems to be a very different game, but probably better since it's more like the arcade game. This reminds me that I need to get Namco Museum vols 4 and 5 for Return of Ishtar, and Valkyrie Densetsu. It's too bad Tower of Druaga, and Dragon Buster are on two other volumes.BoneSnapDeez wrote:Now, you probably already know this, but there's also a Valkyrie no Boken remake on Namco Anthology 2 (Japanese PSX). Yeah the remake is like Valkyrie no Bouken done up in the Densetsu style..... Sort of? Maybe?
You gotta get Famicom Dragon Buster d00d. The "gold cartridge" of Japan!

Markies' Games Acquired List Of 2019!
1. Atelier Iris 3: Grand Phantasm (PS2)
2. Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic 2 - The Sith Lords (XBX)
3. Super Castlevania IV (SNES)
4. Top Gear Rally 2 (N64)

I added Top Gear Rally 2 for the Nintendo 64!
The original Top Gear Rally was a surprise hit for me. It had fantastic music and controlled perfectly for a racing gaming. It was perfectly tight and incredibly smooth. Also, it had that perfect balance between arcade action and simulated realism.
After beating it, I went looking for more games in the series. I was happy to find that they made a sequel and I went looking for it. It was rather easy to find, so I was happy to finally add it to my collection.
Some reviews I've seen say the game isn't as great as the first, but I am willing to keep an open mind. The first one blew my expectations and I am hoping the second one will as well.

Re: Games Acquired 2019
Wrapping up the month with some good shit. Some local finds:
And some recent arrivals from Japan:
May list...
Re: Games Acquired 2019
Noice. Dragon's Trap (SMS), and Legend of Heroes 1 (MD) were wise choices. I might have to settle for the Game Gear version of Madou Monogatari II, also.
DJ Boy is such a weird beat-em-up. I should probably play more of it.

I completely missed this. Did you go for your honeymoon? What area of Japan were you in? No one wants to honeymoon in the winter, but I would have totally recommended waiting to go to Hokkaido's Yuki Matsuri, in February. It is actually fucking epic, and even a lot of Japanese people don't really seem to know about it. It's one of two hidden wonders of the world that I've seen in my life, along with Thunder Over Louisville which is just the best fireworks display imaginable.alienjesus wrote:I was in Japan!
