I didn't see that anyone had mentioned it so here goes: Castlevania 2? It's the game that eventually gave them the RPG concepts for Symphony Of The Night.

Highly recommend Within A Deep Forest. It's a little different being a ... ball and whatnot, it's really awesome.

And wow, I need to check some of these out myself.
