Tiger Handhelds and Long Lasting Batteries!

Post by Ziggy »

Anyone ever have these Tiger handhelds back in the day? I had Altered Beast...

I'm doing some remodeling in the basement, so all of my game stuff is currently boxed up. When I went down there on the morning of the 20th, I heard a faint beeping. So I stopped and listened. That sound is burned into my memory. It's Altered Beast! Whatever box it is in, it must have turned on when I was moving everything.

So I can hear the game start, then I hear the player get unmercifully beaten up and die, then the game eventually starts over. The thing is, there's no time-out or auto-off feature, so it just keeps going and going. As of last night, it was STILL playing! And the strangest part is that the two AA batteries in there have been in there since God knows when. 10-20 years? I'm surprised the batteries haven't leaked. But even still, that they've been sitting this long and the game has been running for something like 120 hours now. Granted, those handhelds don't use much power, but still. I can't wait to find out what brand batteries those are!

I've got a few, have had more over the years. They get dumped on somewhere between a bit and a bit not fairly really and it kind of depends on which game. Currently I've got MM2, Castlevania2, Karnov, Baseball, Sub War, Daytona USA, and also a blister pack sealed Star Wars Imperial Assault (which I have had loose, it's solid.)

The Sub War though and Daytona are unique. Sub War is part of a failed short line of super sound games. Instead of the single monotone beep it has a few different sound effects it pulls off for explosions, taking a hit, dishing out the pain, and radar pings too, along with your life/damage restores. It really adds a good dimension to it and the effects along with how the subs pop up actually is well done and handled in a smooth yet frantic pace.

The other Daytona was also a short failed line of VRT-X. This one is unique in that only 2 other games (SF2 variant and MK3 variant) got the treatment. It runs on 3AAs instead of 2, and this is because it has a unique feature that added battery runs, a pair of yellowish colored LED lights on a telescopic neck off the top/center of the unit. This is one thing, the other about it is the hologram background image beyond the LCD glass. It gives the game this cool look of 3D when you play, and if you flip on the light it changes it some to even be more dramatic, with the bonus of night time play. Daytona is the best of the lot since the car AI, segments of the screen, and general layout actually drives really well like a very early 80s racing game. It has the same features of daytona on the basic level with PIT for gas/tires/damage, X amount of laps, and X cars to pass to place, plus it does this on 3 difficulty levels. The game for Tiger is quite involved so I've kept it, and my luck it was a goodwill grab for a dollar mid last year.

I've owned a few, tho I never enjoyed playing any of them except Tetris. IMO the gameplay is pretty poor even if you can figure out all of the play mechanics. I got a few as gifts as a kid and also bought some years ago so I could say that I played every official version of Megaman and Castlevania, tho I counted the wrist watch versions of those as the same games as the handhelds because those watches were (are) so expensive! I don't have any tiger handhelds anymore; I wish I knew where my Kellogs Tetris wristwatch disappeared to. That thing was really cool actually.
