I always thought this and Blades Of Time looked like kind of fun hack-n-slash games. Haven't played them, though.

A cult classic for sure! I had kind of forgotten about this one.

B-Movie ridiculousness. But my wife and I had a blast playing this back when it first came out haha.

Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon

A remake of the original Fami game on DS! Shouldn't it have been called "Dragon Shadow" to follow that thing where all DS games had subtitles with the initials "DS"?



Street Fighter IV

OMG, one of the most defining games of that console generation for me was SF4. Wow.



Dragon Quest V

The DS was really a JRPG powerhouse by 2009. Like FE above, this would be the first time we saw DQ5 released in the US.



Grand Theft Auto IV: The Lost And The Damned

The first big GTA4 expansion. Jeez, Feb was a busy month.



Prinny: Can I Really Be There Hero?

Blue Dragon Plus

Another JRPG on DS... this time the sequel to an Xbox 360 exclusive which is interesting.



Star Ocean: The Last Hope

I forgot this game even existed.



Halo Wars

Halo Wars! Halo Wars!

... I tried being selective about what to highlight, but seriously that is a LOT of interesting games for just one month so early in the year. Wow.




Nintendo Power #238 was the "RPG Issue" and featured the upcoming Phantasy Star 0 on the cover. Again, highlighting the DS as the new home for traditional JRPG's.




Game Informer was hyping Singularity... a game I've heard the title of but know nothing about.

2009 was the year I started getting my collection back together again after foolishly selling everything once I started dating my new gf around 2008. "Who needs video games when I have this beautiful girl?" i foolishly misled myself.

Took me about six years to get my collection back and then some, I was obsessed. Got about 900 games total, and realized I wasn't playing anything and purged it all. My gf also ridded herself of me, and I decided to drown my sorrows by slapping together a PC in 2015 which showed me the light. Thank you Witcher 3, and emulation, thank you so very much.

I remember playing a lot of Donkey Kong Country, Super Metroid, and Tales of Symphonia in 2009. Go figure.

I had a great time with OneeChanbara, and definitely remember putting a virtual-pin on my virtual pegboard for Prinny. I have played OneeChanbara a lot over the years and have yet to even start to experience the great 32bit Metroidvania that Prinny: Can I really Be the Hero? offers.
My brain was not in charge of this bad decision. I'll buy Prinny this year...

March 2009 started off with a bang...

Phantasy Star Portable aka "PSP" - get it!?! I don't remember actually playing this one all that much. Which is weird. I played the DS game more, though. This is a reminder that we need a new Phantasy Star game; maybe on Switch; maybe, I don't know a sequel to PSO proper? If only such a thing existed...




Reminder: There was a Watchmen game. Did anyone actually play this? I heard it was pretty bad.




I know more than a few folks were fans of the Konami "Rebirth" series. Sadly, a decade later the Wii Ware shop is closed. RIP.




I had sort of stopped paying attention to the Tomb Raider games after the original trilogy, and then my wife actually picked up Underworld as an impulse buy and we played it together a bit.




Here's another one I hear about randomly but know nothing about. Avalon Code continues the DS's slow-but-sure rise as the little king of JRPG's.




I heard some of y'all like Platinum. Remember this game? I do. I also remember that when you shoveled through the ware, you found some of the strangest damn games released on the Wii.




Crystal Defenders was a weird quasi-spin-off of Final Fantasy Tactics. Still playable on Xbox One today thanks to backwards compatibility.




Much has been said of RE5. Most of it bad. Yes, sure, it's a big dumb action game. But, it's one of the only RE games I've co-opped with my wife (the other being Revelations 2) and we had a lot of fun. So there's that.




More DS JRPG goodness!




Remember that one time when the DS got an exclusive GTA game and it was a throwback to the early overhead games? Such an interesting era.




I always forget there was a Suikoden game on DS. Was it any good?

The Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles series continued with a Wii and DS entry.




Here's a game by From Software that was released on Wii and PSP. Never knew about this one prior.




Look, when I was a little kid I thought the original Leisure Suit Larry was hilarious. In 2009 I was already kind of baffled and amazed that the series still existed. I hear that a new game is coming out... in 2019. Weird.




Guitar Hero and Rock Band were still huge in 2009. I've actually been feeling a ping of nostalgia for these games. I wish I hadn't sold all my instruments at a yard sale two years ago.


And now the obligatory look back at magazines...




Indiana Jones And The Staff Of Kings graced the cover of NP in March. I never played that one, though I've been on the lookout for it since it has the old Lucas Arts adventure game on the disc as a bonus.




And finally GI was promoting God Of War III.

I don't know much about life, but I'm 100% certain that I would enjoy Sonic's Sword Adventure and Sonic's Werewolf Adventure more than everyone else seemed to. I refuse to believe that those aren't fun games.

Couldn't stand MadWorld personally. I've never taken kindly to cussing in video games for whatever reason, despite having a sailor's mouth myself. GTA can get away with it, Sunset Overdrive scared me off with it, and even Cyberpunk 2099 seems like it is ill-fitting with all the salty language.

Mario wouldn't swear.

I feel language in games def depends on context. GTA5... yeah it makes sense. I haven't played Sunset Overdrive, though I'd like to.

Cyberpunk... can do whatever it wants because it looks AMAZING.

^ All I know is that due to this thread, I now really regret selling both my initial DS, as well as the DS which I originally bought off of you. I'd love a little portable JRPG machine to stick in my fanny pack alongside my usual fantasy novel.

Maybe my Hannah Montanna PSP will do the trick. It is soft-modded... hmmmmm
