On RTS: StarCraft killed the community aspect; the only time I recall banning a game from my college computer gaming club, it was StarCraft, because the players would flat out steal stuff. Their behavior soured me on that. Then with WarCraft 3 going the hero route and things turning into DOTA and MOBA stuff, I got bored. I very rarely play a MOBA, pretty much only when friends convince me.

Fighting Games: One of the big ones would be fighting games. The last one I really played a lot of was Soul Caliber 2 on the Gamecube. However, my fighting games had been going downhill since Marvel vs Capcom on the Dreamcast. I mainly got Soul Caliber 2 because of Link in the game. I was never a huge fan of fighting games to begin with and with the combos as I had a hard time to pull them off. I did buy a few other games such as Soul Caliber 3 & 4, Persona 4 Arena and Street Fighter 4 (due to Playstation Plus Free Game at the time). Plus I can't physically play these games that much anyway because all the fast combos that I am able to pull off hurts my hands and cramp up really fast. So I have to quit for 20 minutes or play something that doesn't require fast button movement.

Racing Games: With the exception of Mario Kart and Sega All Star Racing (and even Sega one I'm mixed on), I'm no longer a fan of these games. I use to play Gran Turismo and Cruis'n USA for example all the time and I remember trying to unlock all of the secrets and little things for them. Now a days, I just feel kinda blank on it. Maybe it is just I like more chaos and non realism more than racing. I still play the older games sometimes but Mario Kart is honestly all I play.

FPS: I wasn't a huge fan of it to begin with but I loved Wolfenstein, Doom, Goldeneye, Perfect Dark, etc. Whenever these series came out I use to buy them. I think it was the 2000s when my interested in them started to die out. I saw the new ones and I felt that I had no interested in them. I'm not a fan of online play (even to this day, I hardly play online. The 2 exceptions is Splatoon and Overwatch but I'm not huge into Overwatch as I am with Splatoon) and everything was moving more and more towards the multiplayer aspect of it. I just can't get use to it as I use to be.

And for each dungeon or castle or forest you fight through, you are watching your HP and MP, and using a limited item stock to replenish them. So those random battles are less about combat strategy in the traditional sense, but more about how to most efficiently dispose of the enemies without dipping too far into your various resource pools.
This is how these games should work. In fact, it's how Wizardry works. I played Wizardry VIII and it really showed me how the genre can actually be interesting and deep and fun. You really have to take care of your resources and decide whether you can spend them at that point or not and if it's safe to do so. The issue is just that most aren't like that.

For me basically any open world game now. I was really hyped about Spiderman when it was announced years ago and now when i try to play i just wanna get to the mission sections to get to story and try the combat. I remember playing GUN, GTA Vice City and San Andreas and for hours and days until i really didn't know what to do anymore. GUN must be the first game i have ever reach 100%.

RTS as well, i didn't play a lot of them but played a bunch of Age of Empires and Warcraft 3. I did try to beat starcraft but then i just stopped playing and each time i start up Age of Empires 2 i get bored very fast. Maybe is just i play it way too much back in the day. I still play Warcraft 3 every year or so.

I never got into JRPGS but i did play A LOT of pokemon games. The newer ones never totally click with me. If i ever play any pokemon game i usually just replay an old one with a fresh team instead of starting a newer one. Let's eevee did catch my attention tough since a prefer a remake of a older game and you can put a hat on eevee.

Arcade-like beat 'em ups don't thrill me like they used to apart from my favs: Turtles in Time, Maximum Carnage, and Streets of Rage 2. I tried playing X-Men at a local barcade, we had four players and everything, even beat the game... I was praying for the damn game to be finished. How long can I move around and just pound the same damn buttons. No fun for me whatsoever.

Shmups are still p cool. I prefer the slower-paced horizontal games though like R-Type, Gradius, or Abadox on NES. Dear lord, I love me some Abadox!

Interesting to see so many people disliking JRPGs in here. Lots of modern ones I find a bit too... anime? But I can always go back to the oldies and adore them. I must admit though, since building a PC I might have a preference for WRPGs now, but I'm an RPG man through and through.

I think that since other genres started incorporating RPG elements, the genres themselves have suffered.

A lot of the RPG stuff is due to age and life events. It's much harder to really give an RPG the time it needs when you have kids and obligations and whatnot. Some people do it, but some others have a really hard time balancing those priorities. RPGs are one of the more demanding genres when it comes to regular time commitment.

Yeah, I can understand that. It was like when I was going to school and working full time. I barely had time to read a chapter of a novel before bed, much less get a game going. Being too exhausted to play video games, I never thought I'd see the day. Between working & taking care of my house, dog, two cats; and spending time w/ my gf & friends... I can only imagine how some wouldn't have time to play.
