You are really cutting off a whole genre, based on some of the sub par lyrics that some of the bands have. Jonathan Davis (Lead singer of korn), may have whiney lyrics at times, but he delivers them better than anyone else.
What would you classify as "real" metal? Their are ALOT of bands that call themselves "metal", but have some terrible lyrics.

you know, and i'm only saying this thanks to your avatar, but a lot of modern hardcore fits this description as well.
very good observation, i hate modern hardcore (for the most part). Its actually even more annoying than nu metal, because hardcore used to be good....nu metal never was. Same deal with modern hardcore, buncha whiney suburban kids bitching, trying to act tough and wearing retarded clothes.

I really liked Korn's first three albums. They experimented quite a lot with different sounds, both instrumentally and vocally and came up with some great music in the process. Their willingness to work with other artists outside of their own genre (both directly and through their multitude of officially sanctioned remixes) was great too.
After that they seemed to lose it. Whether it was the fame, the money, they ran out of ideas, or they just simply stopped giving a shit, it just all turned generic and crap. Then "Head" (guitarist) found God and went to India, which pretty much signified the good old days were gone for good and never coming back.
Oh well, nothing good lasts forever. There's dozens of other bands who've gone through the same thing. That's just life in the music biz. Speaking for myself, it's been a long time since I've listened to any music, let alone paid for it. I have barely enough time left for gaming, let alone any other forms of entertainment.
Nu-metal was to angsty teenagers as boy bands were to teenybopper girls. It was commercially viable to sell this image to high school kids struggling with their identity. The bands that influenced nu metal were actually talented and a lot were really good (helmet, quicksand, tool, etc...). But as it always goes, a bunch of untalented kids formed bands to emulate this music, and POOF!... trickle down effect...more bands...less good music..
Regardless of whether or not you like Korn, you have to admit that when they came on South Park and did their best Scooby Doo impression it was pretty great.
