I'm maybe halfway through the game, just finished Ravenholm and I'm very underwhelmed by this game. I tried playing Half Life 2 a few years ago and got bored with it. Figured I'd give it another shot with The Orange Box collection, and it's just not very interesting. The game's overall design is crap. You've got these cheap, annoying head crab things, a stupid hoverboat section that drags on for what seems like an eternity, eventually making you ask yourself if you're actually playing a shooter or a stupid hover boat racing game and I could go on and on about other annoyances. Overall, the game doesn't offer much that I haven't seen in other shooters. Your standard collection of weapons and the usual take cheap hits but never die because there's health items everywhere school of shooter game design.
Gordon Freeman is boring. I'm sorry, but characters who don't talk are lame and unrealistic. Amazing how every character you come across treats him like Jesus Christ when he apparently doesn't even know how to speak. Makes him rather dull and even a bit creepy. Seriously, there's something seriously wrong with a guy who never utters a single word.
Ugh, I am so sick and tired of playing games that the gaming community goes on and on about like it's the greatest thing ever and then being thoroughly unimpressed by them. Just another over hyped, generic game.
Wow, Half Life 2 is really not that impressive

I don't get it, I thought you liked the Zelda series.

You buy HL2 for the access to the mods. If you bought it on a console, that's your own damn fault.

Go die.
Ok, that was a little rough...
Please go die. HL2 is an amazing adventure. Hands down the best fps since....Half Life 1.

You may just not get this series. Did you play the first game?Gamerforlife wrote:Ugh, I am so sick and tired of playing games that the gaming community goes on and on about like it's the greatest thing ever and then being thoroughly unimpressed by them. Just another over hyped, generic game.

Is it possible that you went into this game thinking "Well, everybody loves it, so it has to be shit"? I just don't understand... if you dislike this game, what DO you like?
I'd imagine a person who couldn't get any enjoyment out of Half-Life 2 would be a soulless robot who exists only to point out the negative aspects of everything. A Captain Bring-Me-Down, if you will.
It's kinda funny that you bring up a lot of the best parts of the game as a negative. The fact that Gordon never talks is a Godsend. Can you imagine him being as fucking annoying as Tommy from Vice City? The only "Talk-a-lot" character that I ever liked was Duke Nukem, and there are plenty of people who hate his guts too.
You bring up the hover craft part and then complain that it's just another first person shooter. You fail to mention the Gravity Gun, Overwatch, Pheropod and Reprogrammable Sentries so that you can make a faux point that all the weapons lack imagination.
You complain that Gordon can't die within a few shots... this isn't Super Realistic, and THANK GOD IT ISN'T! When the hell have you played a game and enjoyed the fact that you die in one shot? Maybe you are the type of person who prefers Gran Turismo over Burnout, I dunno. I've always preferred fun over realism, and they're usually mutually exclusive.
And seriously, if RAVENHOLM hasn't convinced you this is a great game... I just don't see how you could be human. Ravenholm is one of my favorite experiences in a FPS, ever. I've played that one chapter over and over again, and it's always great.

FLAME ON!
But seriously, Half-Life 2 is an excellent game. I am guessing you were unloved as a child and as a result don't recognize the sheer awesomeness that is HL2. I'm guessing your favorite game must be Superman 64.

To enjoy HL2 you need to play the first game for the story as well as love mods.
Older. Not wiser.

I personally hated Ravenholm, since those fast zombies are annoying as hell. I usually end up wasting a very large amount of ammo in that level and am always glad when it's over. The rest of the game is fun, though.the7k wrote:And seriously, if RAVENHOLM hasn't convinced you this is a great game... I just don't see how you could be human. OK, first, stop with the whole "Are you human? How can you not like this game???!!!!!!oneone" crap. We can disagree without being asses. I'm calling in moderator fiat on this one.
I really enjoyed Half Life 2. There were parts I didn't like, certainly. I found Ravenholm a little annoying, as well as the ant lions when I first got the buggy, but it sounds like you aren't that far in, yet. I think you need to push through Ravenholm and you'll find the later half of the game picks up a good bit. Keep in mind that when this game was released among its high profile competition was Doom 3, which is infinitely more generic.
