Sony is an international company that has to deal with differing national laws on content. Japan has always had uncomfortable legal loopholes for allowing sexualization of young women who are not of legal age. Sexualization of minors is highly problematic at the very least from a legal perspective. When games have traditionally been brought to the west the worst of it is typically toned down and the characters re-cast as 18-year-olds. But that kind of attempted mitigation is getting less effective, because it still exposes the publishers to accusations of impropriety due to how thinly veiled such measures are.

The legal angle isn't the only one, however. Companies like Sony and Nintendo are interested in making money, and if you don't care for your corporate reputation, if you allow what many of your consumers and business partners might consider questionable content on your platform, you risk alienating people. Stuff that releases on PS4 is inextricably linked to Sony, because Sony has an approval process and does all the manufacturing and digital distribution.

Now, to put my own biases on display, I have no problems at all with adult content. But I do have a problem with Japan's sexualization of minors, especially how prevalent it is. I think Sony is right to identify that this isn't an image it should be keen to be associated with.

I think Nintendo is probably pretty content with their station, right now, and doesn't really want to take those kinds of actions at this point. I think if the market shares were reversed, you might see Nintendo taking similar actions. However, the original article, and one of the ones it references, don't necessarily indicate to me that Sony is actually implementing a new, widespread policy. It seems a bit more arbitrary than that, just based on what was presented in the articles. I don't really follow any of these things, though. I haven't really cared about "keeping up" in more than a decade.

I suspect that Sony simply wants to limit certain adult depictions on its platform, and they've assessed that pissing off the animu crowd is a lot less damaging to their bottom line than pissing off the dude-bro segment of their market.

It's also worth taking into account that both Sony and Microsoft were named in a lawsuit in the mid-2000s over The Guy Game, a trivia game where women would remove their tops if you answered questions correctly. One of the women was 17 at the time her footage was recorded. The game was pulled quickly once it was announced, but it still likely left a bad taste in the mouth for Sony and Microsoft regarding underage individuals and nudity in games in the American market.

I got Gal Gun 2 on Switch I don't know if there are any differences on PS4.
