Tokyo Beat Down

Post by Pulsar_t »

Impressions anyone? Destructoid and Gamespot both seem to dislike it. Unlike the GBA the DS is quite lacking when it comes to old school brawlers (or brawlers of any kind).

The enemies are rather aggressive and competent in this game. The last brawler I've ever spent an extensive amount of time with is TMNT2: The Arcade Game on the NES, so I've had to get more used to dodging.

The biggest thing with the game is that the movement plane is different from most old school brawlers.

The old games generally take up half or more of the screen for the floor plane. This makes it very easy to see where you are relative to enemies and more easily dodge/move into position.

In order to accomodate the large characters on the small DS screen the movement plane is much smaller. I'd say it's the bottom quarter at best. As a result, it's harder to match your level with the enemies.

The controls are a little sluggish. Like MrPopo said, it's difficult to know when you're on the same plane as your enemy. The story is a bit verbose and unnecessary. Sometimes using the gun doesn't work. I don't understand when you do a punch combo you finish with your handgun even if you don't actually have a handgun equipped...

Niode, go into the police station and go to the dojo. You can see that if you time your combos correctly they just decide the pistol is your quick finisher. It's not like you discard your pistol when you pick up an MP5, it's just that the MP5 takes down baddies easier.
