I find the Resident Evil series fun to play, but not scary at all. I've found the Silent Hill series to be not fun to play, but it does manage to invoke a sense of dread... but yeah, not scary.

I could count on one hand the amount of video games that have ever actually frightened me. That is to say made me feel nervous or uneasy. None of them are actual survival horror genre entries. Actually the scariest game I've ever played, is an adventure game in which you cannot even die. It is called The Lost Crown. The second most scary would be Thief.

I think RE7 is legit scary. Also Alien: Isolation.

I think it's just common for scary games to be that way due to quick cut, jump scare type things. Thinking of things like [i}PT[/i] or SOMA where there may be a lot of contributing factors, but it's hard to match the "creepy looking thing grabs you and screams in your face" in effectiveness. Then you're on edge trying to avoid that happening again

Personally though, I'm not real big on that, in games, movies, or much else. So usually there's gotta be some other draw for me to really care. Games that control poorly, or force cameras that just don't work for me (trying to play RE4 and Dead Space gives me a headache) aren't going to do that.

That game was definitely tense.

I found System Shock 2 to be rather scary due to the clunky mechanics and incredible sound design

System Shock 2 definitely had my shoulders tensed while playing it. It uses the Dark Engine (same engine as Thief), and yes that engine's sound implementation is second to none. Even all these years later.

Finished up the Chris scenario in Resident Evil tonight. Very solid, fun adventure game. Not scary, though.

More of you should play Call of Cthulhu Dark Corners of the Earth. I haven’t played a lot of them, but it’s the best horror game I’ve played.
