Both defended themselves effectively. Neither is a "pussy." Both saw their opportunities, realized their chances, and came out of the situations alive.

And that's the best they could hope for. There's nothing weak about it either way. If either man had allowed themselves to be the victim, they could have still safely made it through the ordeal, but that would have required them to allow their lives forfeit to individuals who have dissimilar moralities. And that was an outcome they refused.
