Narrow audio recivers

My TV cabinet is from Pier One. After getting it home I realized they seems they lack an understanding on the standard depth of audio/video equipment. My retro setup is stored elsewhere, and it does fit the original xbox fine, but not a standard av receiver. Is it going to be hard to find a 5.1 receiver that will fit something like this? We are talking around 11.5 in depth here.

I so know what you mean man... so many entertainment centers fit NONE of my receivers

The ones that do have room to fit the device, but once I hook up the cables they don't fit.

It's like they design it with those cheapy receivers in mind (tiny little ones that)... but they certainly don't fit my Denon, Marantz OR Pioneer Elite.

i think you nailed it. Most pre-fab furniture is heading to small minimal space. Flat screens and little 5.1 dvd players.

what is the retro enthusiast to do? Build custom furniture. I've started to come to grips with the fact that doing that is the only way i'm ever going to get the setup i want.

I can't be sure what it looks like with out some pics, but what I would do... The receiver is on a shelf, right? I would cut the back of the furniture out so that the receiver can stick on the back of it, but be flush with the front of it. Unless the back is solid would, but even then I would consider doing it. I'd rather do that then have to buy a new receiver just to fit the furniture.

Well, I don't really have a receiver I like right now. I am planning on purchasing one with hdmi inputs and figured since I was in the market I should get one that fits. Last resort will be to cut a hole in the back, but I figured they should models out there I should look at first. I am looking for a entry level 5.1 channel receiver with Dolby digital surround and hdmi switching. Besides that, the depth should be <12" as the shelf itself is 12.5". I have seen a few all digital receivers around that seem to run smaller, so I may check into those.

If that's your plan you're going to want to go even shorter to allow space for cables. 2 inches might be cutting it close. So you're looking for something less then 10". Anything that small I wouldn't even call entry level, I'd call it "what a cop out, shoulda just used the tv's speakers" level.

Also you may want to consider the ventilation of the space, receivers can get really hot if they aren't ventilated properly.

That's a tiny receiver... I'm not sure you'll find it.

I say mod the furniture. You aren't going to get a reciever with those specs in that footprint.

Like LoD said, you've got to think about ventilation. You really don't have much room to play with once you've factored in the cables. Granted you can get 90 degree hdmi connectors which buys you some space but anything that uses RCA (at the smallest) is going to eat up at least an inch to allow proper flex.

Next time you buy furniture you may want to take measurements for the things you plan on installing in said furniture. I've seen it happen so many times especially when a woman has been part of the furniture selection process. Good luck convincing her that measuring your entertainment centre isn't a waste of valuable decorating time!

Ikea shelf with Capita 6" legs to raised the TV higher. Receiver will reside outside cabinet underneath TV similar to this minus the door stopper legs:

Not perfect, but saves my from trying to modify my entertainment center. If I find something different it will always fit underneath this shelf anyway. Thanks for the suggestions everyone!
