Nearly 200k people using SNES controllers on Steam

Controller compatibility in PC games used to be managed only by the individual game developers, meaning a game supported a predetermined set of hardware and players selected from these prescribed input options. In 2015 we began an experiment to find out what happens when the community is less constrained. We shipped tools that allow Steam users to map controls from various devices (e.g. Steam Controller, PlayStation controllers, Xbox controllers) to any combination of inputs that the title understands (e.g. keyboard keys, mouse movement, controller presses). Additionally, we created a system to share and modify these controller configurations so the best input schemes boil up to the top, allowing the cumulative efforts of the community to benefit us all. These two features, remapping and sharing, served as the foundation of what we now call Steam Input.

Three years later, the Steam Input experiment is starting to bear interesting results. By supporting so many controller types we've learned about which controllers are being used on the platform and by accommodating customization we've learned how players prefer to interact with different genres. Today we'll share figures on which controllers have been connected to Steam, how controllers are being used, and what happens when a new controller is released on the platform. We'll also discuss the Steam Controller and how hardware choices set it apart from other controller types.
Look within the "other" section of the chart and see that just under 200,000 people are using SNES controllers to play games on Steam.

I'm assuming this mean genuine SNES pads with a USB adapter, and not just clones which would likely fall under "PC gamepads." I found this number pretty damn impressive.

I find it way more interesting that OVER 200,000 people are using Rockband instruments!

Maybe they've using them to play Rocksmith instead of using a legit guitar?

Then again, I knew someone who used to play Metal Gear Solid with a DDR pad...

Haha, I have two versions of Rocksmith and I don't think that's possible... but I had the same thought initially.

As a guitar player myself, I agree that shouldn't be possible. I've never owned Rocksmith but my uncle does and I have played it on his Xbox One. I don't see how you would be able to get it to work with a Rock Band/Guitar Hero controller.

Otherwise, I'm one of those SNES controller guys! Or at least, maybe I am? I use the iBuffalo SNES controller on a lot of 2D retro-style indie games but I'm not sure if Steam would detect that as an SNES controller or a generic PC gamepad.

I also use a Xbox One controller, the Steam controller, and I have a flight stick/throttle for Elite: Dangerous.
Have: Sega Genesis, SNES, Atari 2600, Atari 7800, Atari 800XL, PC, N3DS XL, Wii U, GBA, Xbox One, Switch

Want: Games!!!

I play quite a bit of Rocksmith as well. If I had a nickel for every time someone in a Rocksmith group posts a picture of their new guitar/bass with some variation of the caption, "I got a new controller today!," ... well okay I'd probably have about $5.65. Still, that's not insignificant! It makes me wonder whether the 'rockband instrument' contingent was either a) a flaw in Steam's data collection (maybe the RealTone cable registers as 'instrument' so an incorrect assumption was made during data collection?) or b) it was a simple flaw in the infographic (rock band instrument became Rockband instrument?) or c) there was some human response element to the data collection, and the collective wiseassery of the 'I got a new controller' crowd is what we're actually seeing here. Or maybe there's just a buttload of people playing Frets on Fire through Steam.

Someone mentioned it on either the forums or on Slack that there’s a few games, other than the game you mentioned, that are popular enough where one of those plastic guitar controllers are used. I can’t recall the games however.

Also I’m have a slight love for Steam Stats in general. It’s the finance/economics guy in me.

That's pretty cool though, it shows more diversity. That's what they need to do a lot more in the gaming industry is make more things compatible with one another, as this used to be an issue back in the day.
