I'm tired of running my model 1 Genesis through the RF port. It's time to upgrade.
What is the difference between a model 1 genesis A/V cable, and a Model 2 or 3's?
I've read that their is a difference, and have done some searches on ebay, and have seen many different things. I've seen the basic RCA cables. I've seen some with only a mono set, and I've even seen some with mini jacks... So, it would be nice if someone could show me what I need. Perhaps also explain, why their isn't one A/V cable that would be compatible with all the genesis/megadrive models.
Genesis/Megadrive A/V
Re: Genesis/Megadrive A/V
Unless I am mistaken, it is a different jack on the Genesis/Megadrive for model 1 and 2. That would partially explain the bevy of cable options.

Re: Genesis/Megadrive A/V
genesis 2 has a normal AV cord with a plug similar looking to a saturn. a small DIN type connector, stereo sound.
the Genesis 1 has a mono sound AV cord with a bigger plug, about the size of a dime or penny. The headphones jack however outputs crystal clear stereo sound, so I opened my model one and wired in RCA jacks for stereo sound and composite video.

Need FreeMCboot? I'll install it on your PS2 Memory Card for free if you cover postage both ways.

Re: Genesis/Megadrive A/V
Your best bet is prolly going to be the basic RCA cable that goes into the monstrously big port on the back of the console.
I got one and the difference in quality was astounding.

Is there any major difference between the jacks/cables for the genesis' main output? How can I tell the difference between Model 1's and the others?

Re: Genesis/Megadrive A/V
Model 1 uses a standard DIN. Model 2 uses a mini DIN.
Check GamesX for pinouts:

Model 1 A/V cable only provides mono audio out. If you want stereo (without hacking the console) you need a headphone jack to 2x RCA cable, separate to the A/V cable.
Model 2 allows stereo out via the A/V port at the back.

Re: Genesis/Megadrive A/V
Being in the uk I can take advantage of full rgb scart on the megadrive and it makes some difference.
I have also done the 50/60Hz and jap/englich switch mods along with the A/V rca outs.
The RCA outs improve over the rf but I find it very tv specific, whereas scart is a vast improvement.
The MD1 isn't just he standard din plug the pins are in a U shape not the more common circular arrangment.

Re: Genesis/Megadrive A/V
So if I got a cable like this for the audio
http://www.shoptronics.com/sthe3pltodur.html
What would I need for the video? I would just buy the regular model 1 A/V cable but only use the video from that and have the audio coming from the headphone jacks? I only have CRT tvs, nothing fancy, so I don't think I'd be able to utilize S-Video or Composite.
