N64 game size
Re: N64 game size
During the 16-bit era you didn't have to weigh. The games that were loaded with megabits advertised on the cover. Alas, Nintendo didn't continue that trend with the N64.
Re: N64 game size
Maybe Nintendo figured it wasn't worth it to compete in a size war with CDs.
Re: N64 game size
I love how the Neo carts have their Mbits on the side. Especially since the games go up to 700+. It was their big fuck you to the rest of the 16-bit era.

Re: N64 game size
I really really still cant believe it that great games can be in this small size. I checked Battletoads on the SNES I think it was 677kb!! I mean how can it all fit in there?! Its not like the graphics are plain connected white lines.
Makes me wonder if current games are just bloated so they fill a whole DVD-R

Re: N64 game size
Well a lot of times they don't take up the entire disc. In fact, some PS2 games were on CD and not even DVD.
Re: N64 game size
Don't forget that the graphics on the SNES are at a much lower resolution than most modern games. In PC games especially you might see very large textures being scaled down, as making something smaller generally preserves the detail (from a pure "how does it look" standpoint), while blowing something up frequently gives you artifacts of that process. The SNES sprites were limited to 64x64 max, and each sprite had 16 colors available (but you could make a dude out of many sprites toget around this). So you only need 20480 bits to represent each sprite, or 2560 bytes. That's slightly less than 2.5 kbytes. And that's only if you're using 64x64 sprites, which is huge on the 256x224 screen.
