I received an email today from CNET, claiming I matched an available position. Turns out Gamespot is in need of a senior editor. That's cool I suppose, and I'm guessing it would be fun, but I'm busy with other stuff right now(grad school, for instance), and I don't actually match some of the requirements(they ask for five years experience at a world-class gaming editorial organization, as well as regular blogging experience...definitely don't have that).
But what gets me is that I registered for this thing over a year ago, and I'm just now getting stuff. Does this ever happen to any of you guys?
Signing up for jobs online.
Re: Signing up for jobs online.
All the time. And of course, it never comes when I actually need a job... only when I'm employed.
I would be willing to bet that they would be willing to forgive the lack of fulfilled requirements. From what I hear from people who work over there, is that after the CBS merger, there has been a lot of staff changes. As such, they're looking for new talent. I'd say go for it. CNet, in the past, has been pretty good about letting employees finish degrees (especially when it's in their best interest, as your Grad degree would be) while working. If nothing else, they will just keep your stuff on file until you graduate, or maybe even offer you a not so high up job.

Re: Signing up for jobs online.
I pretty much never get responses from any jobs no matter how much I hassle them, or who I know there. The jobs I get are generally spontaneous flukes, and I begin working same or next day. Also, I seem to be eternally barred from any job that ever gets me near money, computers, food, or customers. I have a perfect record.
...Perhaps....too perfect.

What is the best decision all depends on what direction you want your life to go. Just remember that you miss %100 of the shots you don't take, and it's not that often that you get an opening.

I always get called for jobs way late, it's really aggravating to get called about a job months after you applied.
I'd go for that offer though, it's not like there's much to lose. Even if you don't get the job maybe they'll like you enough that they keep you on file for other openings.

Where I am its natural not to get a return call for 3 months or so.
I think what they do is they collect information and when there is an opening they look in their database and they find your papers so they contact you.
I am also glad they are still hiring int his economy

Re: Signing up for jobs online.
I say go for it. If you get the job and hate it, stick it out for a few months to a year and blam, you have some pretty sweet looking experience on your CV which will help no end down the line.
It annoys me how all these employers want prior experience but how the hell are you supposed to get it without getting a job in the field.
All the jobs I've had I've gained them through knowing somebody on the inside. Which leads me onto my next reason you should take the opportunity. Networking. It's almost required to get a job in any creative industry especially journalism, entertainment and media. A place like cnet/gamespot is going to net you a lot of contacts in very little time.
That's my opinion on the matter!

Haha, if they say you matched their criteria even though you don't have all the experience they want... you could try it out for the summer.
