I came to enjoy MOTW a lot more over the years, great gameplay and visuals IMO.
Terry is a beast and that Ryo Sakazaki kinda guy is awesome too.
But yeah, the whole bad and good ending is annoying, maybe you give Fatal Fury Special or FF 3 a go next year?
Technically speaking, I think MotW is pretty good, I just don't personally enjoy it as much as everyone else seems to. I actually played through Real Bout Special at the end of last year, and that was a ton of fun. I love that game.

Yeah, this one. I guess I'm just a bit surprised that they're still putting the PS1 version on compilations, when they've already put so much extra work into emulating the NES games. I had the PS1 version as a kid, and liked it just find, but playing the Saturn version as an adult was eye opening. Part of that was due to the controller, though.

Key-Glyph wrote:Hey AJ, nice work with Tides of Time so far! I hope you're still able to enjoy the game despite playing on Difficult difficulty. That mode exists as an unbalanced extra challenge to folks who have already beaten it, which is why I recommended against starting there. That, and Normal difficulty dynamically adjusts to how you're doing -- so if you keep getting thrown out of the autoscrolling sky levels, for example, it'll eventually slow down the scroll speed for you. That makes things less frustrating while perhaps being less of a blow to players' egos, since the game is only giving you a reprieve when you need it until you get back on your feet (fins?) again.

It's not that I don't think you can do it, but more that I'm sad to think you might not have a chance to have fun with the game. It's tiring to be aggravated the whole time... which is often what Difficult mode does to a person. I just played through on Difficult a month or two ago myself and even I, a key gyph, was tempted to take a ragequit break from the last level.
Well, you'll be please to know that I have, in fact, completed it now. I'm interested to hear about the dynamic diffculty on Normal, that's the first I knew of that.

1. ActRaiser (SNES)
2. Conker's Bad Fur Day (N64)
3. GoldenEye 007 (N64)
4. Fire Emblem: Fuuin No Tsurugi (GBA)
5. Mother 3 (GBA)
6. Ecco: The Tides of Time (MD)
7. Shenmue 2 (DC)
8. Jet Set Radio Future (XBox)
9. Resident Evil HD Remaster (PS3)
10. Mega Man 8 (PS4)
Bonus: Crazy Taxi

Anyhow, I finished Ecco 2 this morning, and one thing I noticed about the difficult setting is that it makes the game feel more like ecco 1 - some levels are longer or more convoluted, and some of the harder ones are removed entirely (that said, some of the extra levels were nothing special, so no idea why they were locked away).

Ecco 2 was a compelling game, but like the first, I hesitate to say it was a fun game per se. I love the atmosphere and how unique it feels, and I feel like the ideas and invention in this one make it the superior game of the 2 on the platform, but it's still very much an acquired taste which requires a lot of patience from players. Thankfully nothing in the game quite reached the frustration of the tubes of medusa, although a few stages were still a pain.

I also beat Mega Man 8 this evening. Like Mega Man 7, I also feel this game is unfairly underrated, as it's pretty well made and fun. Unlike Mega Man 7 though, I didn't feel like this one was as consistently good - the jump, jump, slide, slide sections can bite me, as can Astro Man's god awful stage - easily the single worst robot master stage in the entire series. Thankfully, the rest of the game is pretty solid, and it has some fun new ideas in the rush expansions and the items purchasable at the shop. Definitely glad I played it.

I'm also occasionally playign some Crazy Taxi, although I'm having some loading trouble with my disc that has kept me playing as much as I'd like. Still, I'm having fun even though I've definitely not master it by any means.

Up next for me is likely to be Shenmue 2 (even though I keep saying that!) or maybe Jet Set Radio Future. I have some time on holiday I plan to start the portable titles and I was hoping to finish up with the N64 stuff as a nice way to relax with one of my favourite consoles towards the end.

Just stumbled onto this thread and it seems like a really fun idea, I will come up with a final list by mid week and start on it right away, just spitballing off the top of my head here are some games I want to play for this challenge:

1) Donkey kong country 3: the only game in the series I never played(other than tropcial freeze), been meaning to play it forever and now I have a good excuse.

2) Ducktales 2: Not sure if it is a classic, but the original is one of my favorites and I never played the sequel

3) Crash Bandicoot 3: see above, loved the first 2, never played the 3rd, not sure if it is considered a classic, but it is a game I have been meaning to play forever

4) Contra: Hard corps: the only game on this list I have played before, but I only played through it once, nearly 20 years ago and have not played it since. I have always been meaning to get back into it but have not, despite the fact that I play through contra, super c, Contra 3, operation c, and contra rebirth annually.

5) Conkers bad fur day

6) Castle of illusion(genesis)

7) Super Mario RPG: I have played every game in the series except this one, have wanted to play it since I was in middle school, now might finally be the time

8) Mega man unlimited: Not a classic game, but in preparation for the release of mega man 11 I have made it a point to play through all 10 original mega man games this year, unlimited is widely considered to be one of the best fan games released so now seems like a good time to play it.

I started up game 4 on my summer marathon, with Shenmue 2.

Played the opening hour and much fun was had, some of it at the games expense in all honesty.

I hopped off the boat into Hong Kong and started trying to find my way to Wan Chai. My girlfriend was greatly bemused by me talking to everyone down the street and asking them the same question - which way to Wan Chai, when they kept repeating the same instructions. I evern beat some people at arm wrestling and was directed to Wan Chai as one of my rewards. I also played some darts and bought a map and some capsule toys.

In addition, I noticed Ryo had a pretty snazzy blue bag with lots of patches and stuff on it, which I found slightly out of character, but in the next scenes it hard turned into a plain green canvas bag, which was odd.

Then just as I was debating the mystery of the bag transformation, some dudes stole my bag and all my money. I spent some time tracking them down, chased a kid through the streets of Hong Kong whilst pulling off sweet moves with my QTEs and fought a bunch of guys to reclaim my bag. Unfortunately they'd spent all my money ($1000+ - no more capsule toys or lucky hit for me...) so to repay me Ryo said the kid had to help him out. Imagine mine and my girlfriend's surprise when they advice he asked for was 'which way is wan chai'. Bear in mind that not only did we already ask every person in the vicinity for directions and get clear instructions, but there's also massive signs with arrows and the words 'wan chai' on them. One of them is even visible from where Ryo is standing at that point  I guess we'll have to assume Ryo can't read the chinese or english text and has a very, very short term memory.

Anyhow, I arrived at a guest house directed by a motorcycle lady named Joy who seems to run a gang or something and gets hilarious hair metal theme music whenever she appears (it sounds like Motley Crue) and saved for the night. It was a short but fun introduction to the game and I'm sure I'll enjoy it as I progress.

AJ, I am so excited for you right now, and for me. I pretty much need real-time updates on your progress through, quite possible, my favorite game ever.

I wasn't too sure about your level of enjoyment from your initial thoughts so far, but if you've enjoyed it to that point, you have so much to look forward to ahead. I can't wait until you get to Da Yuan Apartments, and encounter your first contender for "required listening."

Wooh! Shenmue!!

At some point I might get back to working through my list, but I'm currently trying to finish off Final Fantasy II (FC) after deciding to just abuse the game mechanics on this playthrough I had lying dormant for over a year. It was on my Summer Games Challenge last year, but I don't know if I want to retroactively make it part of my list this year, or not.

Geese Howard, the bastard...IS DEAD (For now at least  )
Now i know the definition "SNK Boss" the hard way.
Man, Fatal Fury's last boss is no joke, hard as nails but in the end my man ANDY BOGARD made it through.
In fatal fury it is clear the beggining of the SNK roots as 2d sprites goes, detailed and full of life, with changing time of day between rounds and all.
Although there's only 3 playable characters, Terry, Andy and Joe, the game's full of singular feats that defined Fatal Fuy/Garou Densetsu , the dual layer plane and charismatic roster to name a few.

Bit of an update, slow going because of the football and the weather. Beat SamSho2 and have removed JSR as I don't have a proper way to play it.

Samurai Shodown 2 is a game I want to like but can't. I put it in the same box as the early Fatal Furys and Art of Fighting: looks great, sounds great and has some wonderfully cheesy engrish that heightens the experience. The downside is it feels stodgy and is bad at explaining its mechanics.

You seem to either take and deal very little or too much damage with little inbetween. Special moves are in the early SNK mould of being too complex to pull off quickly. It doesn't help the XBLA version omits a move list so I spent a decent amount of time literally going through the motions with characters in the hope something would happen. I eventually decided to cheap the game out as a combination of Wan Fu who hits like a truck and Gen-An who has a sliding kick move the CPU can't handle. Even then it's a slog to get through one arcade run and the end boss Mizuki, while not quite on Omega Rugal/Evil Ash end of the spectrum, is still a massive bellend.

I do like the series but like Fatal Fury only when it got a bit slicker around the time of Real Bout Special, SamSho 4. Lovely backgrounds though.

Nice to see others playing SNK oldies too but on the other side, i'm LOVING all the series starters though.
Samsho 1 is secong to best IMO in the series, special moves are not the way to play the game as i see it, as it emulates sword fighting, the tension and fatal blows really fit the game. It's a pitty that you did not enjoy it, it's one of my favourite SNK fighters.

Today i managed to beat the first Art of Fighting, a game that i've played once for no more than 5 minutes and HATED
I have to say, it drinks from the Fatal Fury's water in many ways, but improving in some aspects.
It's a fighting game clearly not in the mold of what Street Fighter 2 set in stone, the focus here is 2 playable characters against unselectable (at least in single player) baddies with much attenttion to storytelling.
I think the game is far more dificult than Fatal Fury but equally more satisying, it took me almost 1 hour and 30 minutes to beat but learning the patterns and actually winning 2 rounds gave me a real satisfaction and overall badassery.
The sprites are HUGE and both Ryo and Robert have some weight, fist fight is encouraged as you have some kind of stamina bar to use energy moves and it adds to the realism that SNK set to this game, even to the point of bruises as the fighters take hits, it's simply amazing!

Nah, I'm gonna keep a clean ledger this time. The one year I actually "completed" the Summer Games Challenge, I did a bunch of massaging of my initial list, with a bunch of games I just happened to beat over the summer (Rockman 1-3 on Rockman Mega World, for instance). If I ever finish another list, I'd like it to be a full list of ten games that I actually started with.

Although, after finally finishing Final Fantasy II, I've now beaten every numbered entry in the main series between 1 and 13 (including X-2), except for FF VI. I don't really like FF VI, and I've got an old save file from the PS1 version that's been sitting at the end of the world for a decade and a half, but I'm feeling somewhat compelled to play the Super Famicom version. I think I'm going to forgo that impulse--and the one compelling me to start up the Famicom version of Final Fantasy III--and instead actually work on my list with Dragon Quest VI, since it, VII, IX, X, and XI are DQ games I haven't played/beaten still. I happen to like the Dragon Quest series way better anyway.
