Mighty Final Fight. Definitely Mighty Final Fight. :)

So, I finished one tonight myself. Gaia Crusaders is an odd one. Made by Noise Factory, perhaps known a bit more for some of their work on later Metal Slug games, you're given control of four (and eventually six) warriors that look wildly different from each other (one is a robot, another a very traditional Taekwondo (?) character, a guy that looks like he might practice Capoeira, and even a massive crustacean-looking dude). Sadly, despite the attacks looking very different, they don't actually feel all that different outside of attack range, power, and speed.

You'll also snag various orbs along the way. Depending on the element of your character, these will either pull a special attack, or if matching the element, a screen-filling hit-all blast.

No throws in the game, either, which is a bit disappointing. You do get both kicks and punches, and depending on the character, one may be a bit more effective. Typically, though, the punches will keep your character in place during the combo, and kicks send you flying forward at the end. You can also intersperse them a bit to get different ends to combos. There's also a short-range dash move, and you can attack with either a punch or kick with those, too.

The game looks pretty good, and considering it was a 1999 release, games like this were a dying breed. Sound design is pretty solid as well. I'd probably say this one is a 6.5/10. Decent-to-good, but won't set the world on fire. Other folks might like it more than I do, though, so I wouldn't just pass it up on my account!

I beat Night Slashers myself last October, it was decent. The thing that stuck out for me was the zombie bowling.

God Hand progress... made it past stage 5, now I'm at the very end of stage 6. Got almost 12 hours in this now! Still enjoying the experience, lots of laughs. More folks need to play this game.

I really don't wanna spoil anything because I know we have some BIG Yakuza fans on here, but for those of you who are interested in the giant, crazy monster-men you fight in God Hand, you should definitely think about giving the new Fist of the North Star game a try (although you don't fight any demons quite that crazy, that I've encountered yet at least  ).

Got through another! This time:

Battle Circuit

Image

Phew, this game is wild. I believe this was Capcom's last arcade beat 'em up, in 1997, and they went out with a bang. Visually light-hearted but sharp and striking, and mechanically complex with 5 playable characters (And apparently up to 4-player simultaneous), each spouting not only a large moveset (Vertical rolling/Running attacks, U+D combos, Hados, etc), but an upgrade system that actually puts all the money you pick up to use! For this run I played as Yellow Iris, a Felicia-like catgirl with a little pet fox named Fin, and used 11 credits to complete this run.

Image ImageImage

I seriously can't stress enough not only how large the moveset here is, but also just how damn cool everything looks. I honestly haven't felt this badass in a beat 'em up in quite some time. And, to compliment this, the enemies and bosses also have quite a range of attacks, which makes your movekit not only flashy and fun, but needed. A lot is thrown at you here, but you have so many tools to handle it with. I was never just spamming a broken attack to get through, but I also always felt I had the freedom to use various moves for different situations.

This game also appears to have a much more complex scoring system than the usual beat 'em up, and the end-of-stage countup looks more akin to a Cave game. There is even a True Last Boss, that you can only reach with a certain amount of points, which I think is really, really cool.

Image

I need to talk about this specific sprite. I was having a great time with this game already, but when these 3 showed up as a mid-boss fight, I just about lost it. This is, seriously, the coolest sprite I've ever seen. They seriously have Major Kusanagi riding the Akira bike as a sprite. If anyone knows how I can make a little gif of this sprite, please let me know, I need this in my life.

Anyways, Battle Circuit was a welcome surprise, and is one of the most impressive beat 'em ups I've played. It was fun throughout, and I'll most definitely be playing this game more. Heck, I've only tried one character, because she was so fun I diidn't want to switch! Could not recommend this more, A+ stuff.

I told you Battle Circuit was awesome. Whenever I play it, I'm always Alien Green.

Its cool that the Battle Download affects all players, so you can actually kind of party build based on what global buffs you want. And since there are 5 characters in a 4 player game, you still have an interesting decision even at max capacity. Considering how wild the game is solo, I imagine it'd be a beautiful madhouse multiplayer.

And you were right, Battle Circuit is extremely cool.

You can download this sprite sheet and put a gif together from it:

I need to play this game this month. I keep thinking I've played it before, but it must have been a longgg time ago, because I can't remember when that was. Capcom made the best arcade beaters though, no doubt about that.

Rolled through Bad Dudes. Think it's the second time in my life I've beaten the arcade version. An okay game. More amusing than "good." Played the shit out of the NES port as a kid but that's because I didn't know any better.

Last night I got a chance to play though Pretty Soldier Sailor Moon for the arcade... and I really did not enjoy it. The fighting wasn't particularly interesting (just mash the attack button really) and the enemies are super cheap. With the regular enemies, there's often a bunch of them that will crowd around and end up doing a ton of damage to you. With the bosses, some of them took forever to land any hits and others would often do attacks that would eat half of your life bar. On the first boss alone I used up 3 continues because of this! Another kind of annoying thing about the game is that the music is awful. Some tracks are bearable, but there were quite a few that just sounded like someone mashing random keys on their piano. The game does look nice at least (the special attacks especially so), but that's not really enough to make me want to slog through the rest of the game.

Unfortunately I don't think I will be able to play any more games for this month. I'm going to be away for a week and since I don't have a laptop I can't really emulate anything while I'm away. I did beat one game for this month at least!

Putting up the Sarge signal again...

Any tips for Belger’s second form in Mighty Final Fight? I can beat his first without getting hit, but I just can’t seem to hit him after he starts shooting his robot hands at me... :? I am punching down his fists, and I know I should strike when he’s laughing. I just can’t seem to get to him fast enough. Should I play as a Guy instead of Cody?
