It did and it was cumbersome. And then you had that stupid filter so you didn't even get your murder porn to make up for the controls. Honestly, it was ok until they introduced guns, which is the point in Manhunt 1 where it went shitty as well.Ack wrote:Didn't Manhunt 2 on the Wii attempt a form of this already by trying to make the players use the Wiimote for certain kills? I recall there being some issue with trying to use it as a garrote.Exhuminator wrote:I imagine the apex of this medium's violent fixation will be a Manhunt style game in VR. Super realistic graphics whilst you rip some bastard's entrails out of his anus, feeling his death gurgles via haptic feedback in your SenseReal gloves. It'd sell buckets, sadly.

Yes Manhunt 2 was a step in the direction I was describing. The developers flubbed the implementation and delivery considerably though.

I mean, some of that was because of the ESRB going "nope, this is AO" so they had to put in that filter. But the bigger problem in both games is that midway through they put in guns, rather than keeping it at the level of you ninjaing around to murder people without being noticed.

Been busy, but yeah, some other folks hit on what I was speaking to. I hadn't watched the trailer at that point, so I was relying on Bogus' summation of what was potentially going down. I have no idea how the plot is going to play out.
Now that I've seen it, that part is ambiguous, but the increased fidelity of the violence has certainly made things less palatable, in my opinion. I play a lot of violent games. No question about that. But usually, there is some level of abstraction involved. What I'm playing usually isn't what Mortal Kombat is doing today. I saw some of that, and said noooooope.
For the record, Mortal Kombat and DOOM bothered me back in the day, too. I was that kid. I still don't care for Mortal Kombat, but the graphics just aren't quite hyper-detailed enough to make it really bad. Same with DOOM; the level of abstraction makes things much easier to take. As I've said before, it feels downright quaint compared to some of the stuff they can do now. And even beyond that, mowing down endless mooks in Contra is certainly different from what we see here.

I think what people are forgetting is that what we are now deeming “abstract” from the 90s was seen as “realistic” then. The games from today which you think look “realistic” now will some day seem “abstract” as well.

I agree that guns were not needed in Manhunt or its sequel.MrPopo wrote:the bigger problem in both games is that midway through they put in guns, rather than keeping it at the level of you ninjaing around to murder people without being noticed.
When the day comes that graphical violence like this...dsheinem wrote:The games from today which you think look “realistic” now will some day seem “abstract” as well.

(Sorry if NSFW, I chose the mildest TLoU2 example I could find.)
...looks abstract, all for the sake of entertainment, we will have reached a new cultural nadir in this medium.
Anyway not everybody is too hot on Naughty Dog's 4K violence:

I can see where they were coming from in those links. The trailer was practically torture porn at times.

I don't know if I believe that is true now. The PS4 and PC are pushing near photorealistic stuff now. It's a very, very small leap from where we're at now to what looks absolutely real if they want it to.dsheinem wrote:I think what people are forgetting is that what we are now deeming “abstract” from the 90s was seen as “realistic” then. Extremely low IQ trailer. I hate shit like this.
Our culture is already violent and misogynistic. This type of nonsense this doesn't "subvert" violence in any meaningful way, it just revels in it. Pretty gross that the developer chose this particular scene to be the cucking trailer for the game. 0/10 will not buy.

Talking about some other games, REmake 2 has some gameplay footage:

I know over the shoulder camera is a turn off for some fans but for me is ok. Im really excited about this game.

The game also does offer the option for a fixed camera like the original.Damm64 wrote:Talking about some other games, REmake 2 has some gameplay footage:
