Yeah the 2D classic styled beat 'em ups aren't very long. Part of the reason I started with 6th gen beat 'em ups, is they've got a bit more meat (longevity) on their bones. That said, I've only got about ten hours invested in this TR thus far. Hope to at least double that by July.Sarge wrote:Well, it's not like most beat-'em-ups are very time consuming, so... yep. I plan on seeing how many I can burn through, myself. Although picking Urban Reign back up last night definitely makes me want to dive back in. How have you built up Brad Hawk in leveling? I have no idea what I was doing beforehand, but it seems like maybe I should maximize my Strikes and Toughness to start with. I'm pretty close to the former.

I might get the nomenclature wrong here, so forgive me if I do, but you'll get the drift.Sarge wrote:How have you built up Brad Hawk in leveling? First I started with fully leveling up Striking. Then I fully leveled up Toughness. Then I fully leveled up Regional Attacking. Then I fully leveled up SPA attacks. Then I fully leveled up Middle Body toughness. Now I'm working on fully leveling up Upper Body toughness. I find that roundhouse kicks and sweep kicks help a lot with crowd control. Grappling never works for me because enemies just feint counter all the time. I'm not very good at feint countering myself but I've gotten better at it. I hardly bother with weapons. I tend to just throw them where I want enemies to go as they tend to seek them. Then when the trap's laid I sneak up from behind and unleash a 12 combo SPA. You really have to exploit the AI in this game.
Thankfully my wrist compression straps showed up from Amazon today, so wearing those should make playing Urban Reign easier on my sore carpal tunnels. I had been using Salonpas patches, but wore them too much, and started getting a rash. This game is making me feel old!

Nah, sorry, I have the Switch Arcade Archives version. Also have the NES port.lordb0rb4 wrote:Bone, are you by any chance playing the DD Trilogy on steam?
Ah, I've been replaying Gate of Doom. I can beat it on a dollar now! I may shamelessly credit-feed a couple of others though.Sarge wrote:Well, it's not like most beat-'em-ups are very time consuming, so... yep. Plus, credit-feeding to victory!

Honestly TMNT III is my favorite TMNT game. It's incredible and has such a cool scenario with the floating city. Used to run through it with my grandpa back in the day. Kind of weird it seems like a hidden gem with Turtles in Time taking up all the spotlight. Good to see TMNT III name dropped here.
I think I'll try to play the arcade versions of the original (II) and Turtles in Time this month.

Did a quick grab from my shelf and would like some opnions on those, please:

Re: Together Retro: Beat-'Em-Ups
Guardian Heroes is pretty great. I'd probably start there, but I haven't really played most of those games; No idea how Advanced Guardian Heroes is, for instance. From what I've seen of Golden Axe II, it looks kind of like a heavily rehashed Golden Axe, with some level environments appearing to be almost identical to some stuff in the original Golden Axe. I wouldn't bother with the SNES version of Final Fight, personally. The Sega CD version is really tough as a home console version, but it or the Arcade version, in MAME, or the Double Impact release, would be the way to go, I feel.lordb0rb4 wrote:Did a quick grab from my shelf and would like some opnions on those, please:
Also, just wanted to say that I really enjoy Zombie Revenge, and thought it was cool you and your daughter had so much fun with it. I don't think it's quite as good as Dynamite Deka 2, but it's still an impressive experience. I found Zombie Revenge to be about a bajillion times harder than Dynamite Deka 2, though.

Did a single credit of Streets of Rage with my wife. We got to stage 5 which isn't bad but we're a bit rusty.
Re: Together Retro: Beat-'Em-Ups
I know this is weird, but while I like Turtles in Time, I've never thought of it as absolutely amazing like some do. I don't know, it just feels a little different from the original arcade game, which is the one I prefer. I also think Hyperstone Heist is fantastic, and more should try out that game, too.
