The GBA version is kind of a remaster / new game all in one. New enemies, moves, and so on. It's easily the best expression of the original arcade game's style. Top tier stuff. Just remember that you have a block button now! (The suited agents will destroy you otherwise.)

Agreed. The GBA version is boss. One of the best beat ‘em ups ever.

I am thinking of playing some of the portable Double Dragon games. I have read that they’re a mixed bag. (One of them’s even a Kunio-kun game!) Do any of you have experience with them?

The GBA version feels like classic DD remixed to the tune of Super Double Dragon, with a touch of PC Engine Double Dragon 2 thrown into the mix.

Yes indeedy, I actually played through all the Game Boy ones a while back. I think the first one is the best of the lot, but it is also very unforgiving, much like the NES game. The second one was that converted Kunio game, but still ends up being pretty fun. The move set changed a bit, though; you've got a sort of crouching uppercut you can pull, and if memory serves, it take the place of being able to jump kick. It's also a lot easier than the first one.

Double Dragon III is trash. Outright broken. Only play out of sheer morbid curiosity. There are some engine quirks that make the game easier once you figure them out, but that might be the only thing worth mentioning about it.

I played some TMNT 3: The Manhattan Project two-player last week. I forgot how much the graphics flicker on two-player, but it still plays great. Possibly the best beat-em-up ever made.

TMNT III is indeed a really good game, and a pretty significant step up from TMNT II: The Arcade Game in my eyes. Not that TMNT II isn't also quite good. I remember one of my favorite challenges, despite rarely wanting to do score attacks, was to maximize my score using only slashes to kill. The game awards you different amounts of points depending on how you take out enemies, and the slash is the highest.

I am really surprised TMNT III came out on NES, and that there wasn't some version of it on some other system. But then, I still lament there was no TMNT on TurboGrafx. That system definitely has the color palette and sprite handling to do it justice.

Man you guys play shit quickly. I dunno what I'm gonna hit next. Probably Double Dragon. I dunno if I've ever really played the arcade version. Also, downloaded Ninja Combat the other night! No D&D or Guardian Heroes in this thread yet?!

Bone, are you by any chance playing the DD Trilogy on steam?
I'd kill to play any of them cooperatively.
I think i'm going to continue my Double Dragon in 2 weeks from now, it's time to branch out and tonight i'm playing Undercover Cops on MAME, never played the game and despite owning it on IREM Classics or something like that i don't apreciate that collection one bit, 50fps killed any chance to enjoy it.

Well, it's not like most beat-'em-ups are very time consuming, so... yep. Plus, credit-feeding to victory! ;)
