How do you unlock the last mode? I thought it would unlock after I beat Nightmare, but I still have the ?????????.
Pretty sure you beat the powered up Zangetsu run you're doing now for the rest of the unlocks, you probably just need Ultimate mode.

Yeah, Ultimate mode unlocks after you kill all your allies and beat the game.

And yep, I've beaten the game five times now. Normal, Nightmare, Normal (solo Zangetsu kill), Ultimate, and Normal (solo Zangetsu no kill). That Nightmare ending is hilarious and could also form the basis of a great sequel.

At this point, I am two runs through: Normal with recruiting all characters and Normal with killing all characters. I've unlocked all the modes, so I guess now is the time to look into Nightmare mode, or perhaps do one of the weird mix/match ones I need for certain achievements.

Has anyone formed consistent strategies for each boss? I'm not bad, but the one on the ship tends to kick my ass.

Also, how does one avoid the various boss final attacks?

The ship boss has a pretty consistent pattern. He swoops a few times, then tosses down lightning rods. Knock those away, and he'll do one of two things; either he'll Storm Eagle you away or he'll do his jump into a slide kick. The latter, jump over him and sit on the edge; that will let you nail him without taking damage. Then the pattern repeats.

You don't need to, it wont kill you. I've beaten bosses a few times with 1 health bar left and survived the final attack. Rondo of Blood was the same way, IIRC.

^ The final boss attacks will kill you in Nightmare mode and even if you have multiple characters, if one dies during that part it doesn't count as finishing the fight too. Happened to me on one of them. I also think you can die from these attacks in Boss Rush. But yeah in Normal, you're safe.

- Train: Very easy, just get behind the stairs he positions in the middle to dodge the blast.
- Turtle: Couldn't figure this one out but I noticed I think he rams into whatever your position is, ie one point I jumped up and he slammed into the middle of the wall rather than the bottom. Maybe jump around and hope for the best?...
- Coins: Pretty easy, just follow the coin falling pattern even as the screen fades.
- Dragon Heads: Nothing.
- Ship Boss: Seems like luck and easiest to pull off with double jump or Miriam. Wait for him in the middle, then jump over him as he does that crazy half screen attack and then the lightning lines will be on both ends, run up to those and stay in position to try and avoid the huge middle blast.
- Umbrella Lady: Could never figure her out, but if you notice there's a big face in the tornado thing, maybe if you hit it it stops the attack in a way?
- Sting Chameleon Bootleg: Easy with double jump, Miram, or Gebel if you can transform into the bat. Just try and jump diagonally before the 4x slice hits you. Maybe you can just walk off the ledge in the nick of time too?

In Boss Rush, you get 2 big hearts so I kind of just used Alfred/Gebel as damage sponges for some parts I couldn't avoid. I also lost Alfred but it didn't matter and I was able to still finish the rest of the Boss Rush.

@Ack: The ship boss, Miriam is his kryptonite! Or if you have Zangetsu's double jump. When he swoops across the sky two or three times, you can jump up (in front of him) and get a hit in usually. Then when he does his little windblast thing on the ground, Miriam can easily slide to keep up with him for a few hits. Zangetsu's lantern/fire can be useful when he's in that spot, though his chain attack can be helpful when he's in the air too.

So I was just watching a speedrun of Nightmare, and there's this really stupid interaction between Miriam and Mage Guy. You can freeze Miriam's sickles, and when they start to unfreeze their hit box triggers on and off in time with the flashing. So if you have a boss who spends a decent amount of his pattern in one spot and you time it right you do stupid amounts of damage (think Elec on Yellow Devil pause trick).

Yeah, the turtle, I've heard, gives a bit of an audio cue on when to jump. If you wait until you see him, you're too late.

Umbrella lady, you need to get up to the level with the giant skull using the umbrellas and slash at it as it comes at you.

Sting Chameleon, yeah, just walk off the edge works, although in the higher difficulty patterns, I couldn't get Alfred to drop fast enough. Worked great in my solo Zangetsu run, though.

Some other tips, I think Popo or others already mentioned some of these though:

- The buff skills can be applied and you can switch characters while they're still active, like Alfred's fire barrier, or Zangetsu's awesome damage boost
- Zangetsu seems to do at least one hit more damage than Miriam (and maybe others, hard to figure Gebel's triple bats), so if you're up close wailing on a boss or something maybe switch to Zangetsu when you can
- You can even switch characters mid jump and use Gebel's bat transformation after getting hit in the air for a save, was useful in the 7th level

Overall I LOVED how the multiple characters thing was utilized here to the point I think I'll miss it a bit in Ritual, haha. I imagine that will have more RPG elements and systems though, being more in line with the CV Metroidvania's. So there should be some nice depth and play styles. I never did play the beta and don't totally keep up with its progress, but that's my guess. I must have it now!!!
