I might give SMT1 a look myself after I finish up Gun Hazard. I have no experience with SMT yet but it's always interested me way more than Persona, the sci-fi elements and whatnot. I own the Digital Devil Saga's and Nocturne but I'll take a look at the first game for this month. The OST is insane!

To clarify I want to check out the SFC version.

Oh, heck yeah! Do it!

Yeah, I believe that might be the only version that has a translation, but the only other versions that might be better would be the Sega CD and/or Playstation versions (and I guess, by extension, the GBA version). I kind of like the soundtrack better on the Sega CD, though. Great game, at any rate. I would definitely recommend playing it.

It decreases the likelihood of encounters while resting and gives you ample opportunity to heal. The bigger issue in EotB is food, because unless you have a cleric with the necessary spell, you are effectively on a time limit.
Yikes that sounds rough. This kind of reminds me of when you were playing it. Did you play both the Sega CD and the PC version, or just the PC version?

Just PC. I wanted to be able to port my characters to the next adventure, so once I moved into EotB2, I had a team ready to go. I've since gone on to beat that, and now I have them waiting for EotB3, but it's a lesser game, so I am struggling to get myself to give it a chance. Part of me wishes there were only 2, as that would have been an excellent adventure that ended on a high point. Now I have to go in and hope I don't run out of food supplies.

SMT is FPDC? I always thought they were more Pokemon-y. I just remembered I do have SMT2 on Playstation that I scored for a buck at a Japanese flea market a few years back. Perhaps I DO actually have something that applies for this month! :O

I've read other folks say the same about the Lands of Lore series. (And the Kyrandia series... what is it with Westwood and the number three?)

It would be more accurate to say Pokemon is Megami Tensei-y.

That sucks about EotB 3. For some reason I felt like I remembered you also playing the Sega CD version, like back when it was a Together RPG game, but come to think of it, have you ever owned a Sega CD? I'm probably just nuts. Anyway, I was just sort of curious if one of the two versions happens to be more difficult, or anything. Part of me would also rather be able to continue on with the same party into EotB 2.

Sure is, but which revision of the PS1 version of SMT II did you score? The later revision (yellow printing on the disc) is the good one. I don't remember the specifics, but the original revision (orange printing on the disc) has some fairly severe bugs. As a consequence, the later revisions, along with being more uncommon, are also generally three plus times the price of the early revision.

In fairness, EotB 3 is not Westwood. They were doing Lands of Lore at the time instead.

Dsheinem and I both played the Sega CD version for Together RPG. So you're not completely nuts. :)

Can't comment on which version is harder though, as I've never played the PC game.

Well, fuck. I'm pretty positive I've got the bugged version. No FPDC for me then, it would seem :P
I only paid a buck for it though, so it was no big deal at least.

I'll just have to play Yakuza Kenzan! instead, which is kind of a FPDC at least (Face Punching while Definitely Cool :P )

No, I've never owned a Sega CD. From what I've read about it though, the Sega CD version adds in a bunch of audio and a couple of animated sequences for the ending, but it might be the harder version simply because of the controls. EotB was built with a mouse in mind, so the transition to a controller wasn't exactly kind.

I'd definitely recommend the PC version and then going on to EotB2. It expands on the first game's plot, features a variety of locales, and offers up a good bit of challenge; in fact, I'd argue not to try EotB2 without a party that has made it through the original, because the enemies in EotB2 can get tough. You also can't clear everyone out of a level the way you could in the first, but there are some places where you can close doors and such to keep yourself safe while you rest.
