Aldynes

Post by sayewonn »

One of the handful of games released for the Supergrafx and probably its best showcase. To be completely honest Aldynes does nothing original but succeeds by being a pretty excellent shooter all around. That doesn't mean much considering how many were released for the PC Engine but I still think it is better than the majority of that system's library.

Moon Crystal

A technically brilliant game with gameplay that almost matches it. Its odd seeing Prince of Persia style animation in a platformer but for the most part it works. Aside from a very sharp difficulty spike and inadequate weapons this is a great game we barely missed out on.

Shinobi III - Return of the Ninja Master

You really don't need me to gush about it here. Shinobi III is one of the greatest action games of all time and if you are even a slight fan of the genre you need this game in your life.

Alcahest

This is a cool little import action RPG that I wonder why was never brought overseas. I use the term action RPG loosely as Alcahest has more in common with your typical action game. This briskly paced game is broken up in to chapters with minimal story and plays like a 16-bit Crystalis with its various elemental swords. I remember hoping it would be fan translated for years and came away impressed with the game even after waiting for so many years.

Low G Man

Post by sayewonn »

Low G Man is a game that I took a chance on. After buying Marvel's X-Men on my birthday the previous year I was weary of making the same mistake twice. But the screenshots and ad copy on the box were enough to entice me. You would think a game about a dude who jumps really high would be average but this is anything but. Low G Man succeeds by having great and varied level design and a pretty cool hook. This is a nice hidden gem in the NES library and one that I thoroughly recommend.

Cross Wiber

Post by sayewonn »

I did not like Cyber Cross, to say the least. I went into Cross Wiber with low expectations but did note that it at least looked better than its predecessor. This turned out to be a pleasant surprise in the end. Cross Wiber is a solid game all around, nice presentation, decently long, and well balanced. This is the type of action game the Turbo Grafx needed more of in the US.

Adventure Island

The NES version of Wonder Boy. Decent but considering it was released almost 3 years after Japan it shows its age.

Knights of the Round

Just a solid port of the arcade game. I would have liked to see more done with the leveling system but its still pretty cool nonetheless.

Silpheed

Post by sayewonn »

I remember not liking Silpheed much at first. I caught on to the way it produced its visuals pretty quickly and lumped it in with the FMV garbage Sega flooded the Sega CD with. But coming back to it years later allowed me to appreciate it more. I still think the difficulty can be a tad too high but this is an awesome experience well worth the few bucks it goes for.

Holy Diver

Post by sayewonn »

I don't want to call it a Castlevania clone....but it is a Castlevania clone. Not 100% of course, but at a quick glance it could pass for a romhack. Irem's import platformer copies some of the worst aspects of Konami's classic and comes out worse for it. Stupidly high difficulty that isn't fun kind of ruins the game and makes it far too frustrating to enjoy.
