Video games are now hot collectibles. They will retain their value if they remain SEALED. Make sure to buy everything at launch and splurge for those collector's editions. You can make an exception for retro games. Cart-only is acceptable, and you aren't a true fan of the NES (or any console) until you own a full licensed set. If you must "play" something just get a free digital Steam MMO or whatever.

It's essential to craft a giant wall of games in your house. Make sure you film yourself talking endlessly about your "latest pick-ups" and at least once every three to five days remind everyone how massive your collection is.

:D Glad to read you see the humor in this. This type of thread comes up ever so often. Games can increase in value, but not a substantial amount to allow one to retire. The same analogy for so many collections, limited edition game controller, the sealed comic book, toys, LP records (well they do wear on every needle play), special edition movie, etc. I think exceptions to the rule might be "resealed" coins and stamps which are appreciated inside a clear case just for the visuals.

My take on a sealed game as others mentioned is to at least play it. Especially if an expensive game, break that seal to make sure the game works and definitely to verify the disc and manual are inside the case. Personally I would never buy a sealed game if very expensive, no way of knowing if a forged reseal and CIB content inside.

Did the same with Pikmin 3. Intended to play it, unsealed it, but about the same time I got so turned off and repulsed by the situation with the WiiU I couldn't make myself play it and trust me I tried. I got as far as opening the box, walking over, turning the system on, then switching it back off. I knew at that rate I was done with that thing so I had to sell it as a new/open game at a little bit of a loss.

The real problem with collecting games for their future value is that if you really DO intend to sell the collection later for a good return, you have to dedicate tons of time to parting it out. Nobody sells their entire collection in one go and gets a great return out of that. Most collectors who are willing to pay for the high-priced stuff only want certain things, because they've probably picked up most of the others. It means you have to price and document and sell every single item individually or in very small lots.

So no, you will not retire on your video game collection unless you plan to make selling your collection a full time retirement job.

i've no plans on making money on common sealed PS3 games hehe. It just feels weird opening them. I do from time to time though.

I can usually tell a legit seal but the last sealed game i opened (Rayman Origins) im pretty sure was a very good reseal. Had the folds and looked factory. It looked great when i got it, gave good eBay feedback, but when i opened it couple months later the case had the normal amount of shelf wear for a game bought a few years ago pre applied heh. Sucks because that was a game i payed double to get sealed over used. :[ 17 whole loonies!

Love that game. I have it on Steam but i wanted to get some trophies on it AND have a physical copy.

Still havnt opened R&C Collection. Played Quantum Break instead today. heh

A sealed UK copy of Project Zero 2: Wii Edition goes for about $140; I tore that sucker open when I got my copy a few years ago. The copy in the Fatal Frame lot I bought just happened to be sealed, and I definitely wasn't going to just NOT play it. As a handful have said, games are meant to be played. Take care of them, but leaving them sealed defeats the purpose.

A few years ago I got a sealed copy of Mega Man 64. I opened it right away and played it and loved it. Might be my favorite Mega Man game. Yes, I said it.

I think the answer here is pretty obvious. Are you buying games in the hopes of flipping them in the future? Then you probably don't want to open them though there are also probably sounder investments for you to consider instead.

Are you buying games to play the games? Then... well... open the game and play it.

There are some games I havent opened that have become valuable. I didnt do it to raise their value, but just dont open til I am ready to play. So the question then becomes. Should I just sell the sealed copy and buy a used to play, and pocket the difference. How much value do I want to burn just to for the pleasure of breaking the seal?
