Getting stabbed is generally more traumatic to the body than a typical gunshot. A deep stab (which would occur if someone decided to slash you with a sword like in an RPG) would do much more damage to nerves and cause more blood loss than a gunshot wound.
If I have a gun and you have a sword, you probably won't get close enough to me to use a sword. Besides, if you're in a fight and you expect swords, you wear armor. Armor is decently effective against swords. Not so for guns. Also, while a nice deep slash would probably do more damage to a non-fatal area than a gunshot wound, a straight stab likely would not. Besides, most RPG guns involve multiple shots and who knows what kind of projectiles.

So yeah, swords should not be more effective combat weapons in RPGs than guns.
Well you really should be more concerned with the fact that a bow and arrow rivals the power of guns in certain games. Hell, how can casting a lightning bolt on somebody cause less damage than hitting them with a dagger? And WTF is up with fist weapons man? They rival the power of guns, swords and magic in some games; how messed up is that? What really irks me is that someone casting a wind spell on my character does just as much damage as a fireball. Seriously a gust of wind hitting my character is equivalent to my guy getting what should be first degree burns?

These damage inconsistencies are making RPGs completely unrealistic. Everyone should be boycotting these games that promote such blatant inaccuracies. How can anyone stand a game where a mere gun is capable of mortally wounding an ancient dragon? That would never happen to a dragon in real life.

@sakicfan84,

Ah yes, your sarcasm is much appreciated. More to my point, I think RPGs in which swords and guns are mixed should be fewer and rarer than they are now. I don't really like getting modern/sci-fi in my fantasy and vice versa. They are not like peanut butter and chocolate. And when they are mixed, guns should dominate. That's all. I don't think calls for eliminating egregious bullshit in RPGs should be equated with making them simple, realistic war sims.

But it does make you seem like one of those "the world is black and white, no gray" sorts. I don't think you are, but don't fall into that trap.

Sorry about being a bit of a dick.

It's just that I think RPGs, most specifically Japanese influenced ones, are in such a creative rut right now, that details like this are the least of the genres worries right now. Then again, I guess the fact that they are reusing some of the terribly mixed science fiction/high fantasy ideas is really indicative of the creative problem that the genre is facing. The genre on a whole just seems so stagnant right now.

Yes, Draw/Junction from FF8 was pretty broken. When I realized I could be a couple tents and synthesize it into Life (I think) and stick that on my HP I proceeded to run around at 10% life, which was about the max health I was supposed to have, and abused my Limits. However, FF2's stat level ups were even more broken. You stick Invis on each of your characters, have them layer it, and fight something big and nasty. In a short amount of time your characters will have rediculous evasion stats and you never have to worry about taking damage again.
