How does stacking disc based games affect wear?

Post by SuperDerpBro »

Do any of you stack games horizontally? I see a lot of people doing this and always wonder why. Space is probably the main answer i guess. Surely it will wear the games on the bottom faster, no? Not to mention how much harder it is to get to them.. causing even more wear messing around with an entire stack rather than just sliding one game out. I have also read that the discs can slightly bow over many years. I always think about this when Happy Console Gamer welcomes me to another episode hehe... No idea if it is true though. Thoughts?

EDIT: I meant stacking complete disc based games inside their retail DVD or Blu-ray cases.

I don't ever store disc-based games on their own. At the very least I give them all generic cases.

Cartridges and games in cases I will sometimes lay flat to stack in columns. The reason is ultimately space; I haven't got the room to lay out nearly 300 SNES carts any other way. When I want to pull one out, I pull the whole column and then dismantle it to get to the game. Yes, it's time consuming, but I find something meditative about the action too.

I keep all of my games in their own DVD cases with artwork printed off (in the case of jewel case games), but I stack them horizontally.

I do a mixture, but mostly horizontally. I'm not too comfortable stacking vertically, so do keep that to a minimum, but I do whatever I can to fit my games in the limited storage space I have...

Why are you not comfortable having your games vertical?

Hang on, I think we've both got different interpretations of stacking games horizontally and vertically. I mean I'm not so comfortable with stacking my games upwards, vertically like a tower. I guess you're probably describing the direction the case is facing and referring to this method as horizontal, because the case position is aligned horizontally, whilst I'm thinking of the direction the 'stack' goes in.

Sorry, to clarify, I have most of my collection stacked like this (example image):

Hehe, yea. That (above) is vertical to me.. But i guess they aren't stacked. Horizontal stacked is games laying flat one on top of the other.. SO many people do it.

I have also seen some people actually stack vertical as well hehe. EDIT: Just like above but using the top of the games as the next "shelf"

Oh, I call that horizontal stacking cause you're moving horizontally. Stacking them one on top of another instead of one along side another is just...wrong.

Agreed. That's how I interpreted it too.
