Gamestop's policy of selling opened/played games as new

Talk about just about anything else that is non-gaming here, but keep it clean

I don't buy any new games at GS. I did write an email to their corporate office letting them know they won't get my business for new games as long as they do this. I suggest anyone else who doesn't like the practice do that.

No need to be angry or anything just get gamers to let them know there losing money because of this practice.

I have 3 GS stores in my town and they are a joke for anything new anyway. More times than I can count the clerk will snicker and say your not going to get that anywhere because you didn't pre order it here.
Then I go across the parking lot to Toys R Us or Best Buy and get that game.

LOL... I haven't bought a NEW "UNOPENED" game from Gamestop in about 3 years. It's always the last copy or the only copy, meaning the game has been gutted. Yay. I have argued with employees about the unethical practice of selling said opened game as "new" but was basically told I could buy my games from another company if I didn't like it... Said game was impossible to find anywhere else (and I hate ordering sh*t online) so I bent over and took... err I bought the game... opened.

I really doubt anything will be done about this - legally or otherwise. We can only hope that mom n' pop resale shops combined with the ever growing digital download services available will eventually snuff Gamestop out. I feel bad for what might happen to the employees but the company as a whole needs to evolve or be walked over. Doing business like this is 1997 isn't going to fly.

I just did the same (wrote a letter)

while I'm sure it won't do any good, I hope tons of people bombard their e-mail anyway. here's what mine said;

Hello-

I am writing in regards to Gamestop's company policy on new titles. Gamestop will not have my business on new games until your stores stop selling opened copies as new. I know your employees often take the games home, and even if they didn't, a game that isn't sealed is NOT new. I don't care how you try to spin it, if the seal is broken, it's used.

I have spent a ton on used games at your stores. If you were bring up my edge card, you'd probably suprised at the amount of money I spend on systems and games, but the practice of selling opened games as "new" will discourage me from visiting your stores at all. I hate ordering things online as I like supporting my local economy, but I may be forced to buy elsewhere if your stores continue this practice.

Thank you so much for your time.

There is a very distinct difference between "Opened" and "Used". Thats all I'm going to say about that.

I will say this however. I do think they should discount opened games it could be 10% stockworn or something at least. If new games are checked out and played they should be moved to used...they would make more money doing this anyway than still selling it new.

In terms of financial value, opened is used. Get a sealed game and walk out of the store. Do nothing but "open" the game, then walk back in and see what it's worth to them.

I agree, even a 10% discount would do , it's just the principle of the matter to me. I still know they take them home, I've gotten scratched "new" discs plenty of times.

They did write me back saying their managers are "required to open a display copy". That's about all they said other than talk to the store manager (who will of course tell me it's corporate policy). the letter didn't say whether it's any manufacturers policy or strictly theirs.

That's fine if they wanna open up one of each game for display, but you CAN'T sell the one you opened as new. Does any one ever pay full price for the floor model TV or stereo? How about a demo car? Game Stop is the biggest rip off any way, that store only exist for little kids. I'll probably never go in there again.
