I respectfully disagree.Segata wrote: You kinda proved my point. Sonic 1 isn't that good even if it is my favorite but it's aged oh so badly. I said truly great on one hand and most of those are not truly great. Sonic 2 and maybe Mania but not played it yet. Rest of those are just decent to good.

The verticality and maze-like design is lacking a bit in Sonic 2 and 3/Knuckles, though S&K's style is complex in its own way with huge levels as well. I have a huge soft spot for Sonic 1 and CD, I think they have the coolest aesthetics too. Those games just look straight up alien with some insanely obtuse backdrops and world design, a Picasso explosion of 90's vibes straight in your face. Sonic CD is visually one of my favorite games of all time with how dense the scaling backgrounds are.BogusMeatFactory wrote:I think sonic mania makes you forget a lot about sonic. There is only one!!!! For real, because sonic mania has these much larger labarynthine levels like sonic cd, but so much better.
Next to Mega Man, I replay the Sonic's the most out of anything probably. Fun quick romps with some of the craziest most unique looking levels you'll ever see and music that destroys anything in the mainline Mario's.
Also haters gonna hate, but I freaking love 3D Blast. One of the best OST's on the Genesis too ... BY FAR!

I actually love 3d blast as well, especially on the Saturn because it has an awesome 3d bonus stage. The game itself is just EXTREME FLICKY!!!Xeogred wrote:The verticality and maze-like design is lacking a bit in Sonic 2 and 3/Knuckles, though S&K's style is complex in its own way with huge levels as well. That's cool. Why forums are great! We may disagree here but we still share a love for retro gaming. Yes, this post is corny but I mean it. Games are awesome!Reprise wrote:I respectfully disagree.Segata wrote: You kinda proved my point. Sonic 1 isn't that good even if it is my favorite but it's aged oh so badly. Sonic is hands down the most over rated series of all time. I can't think of a single game in the series that comes anywhere close to Mario, and never for the life of me understood how sonic ever got put into the same category as Mario, who is the star of the most consistent, most fun, and most innovative video games of all time.
I find the best sonic games to be okay, I have actually played just about every sonic game, new and retro,(have yet to play mania, waiting for a sale) and just don't get why people are so obsessed with these games.
Having said all that, hands down the best sonic game is Freedom planet. That was a truly great game and new sonic games should take inspiration from that.

You sir just turned my world upside down. I had never realized that and I don’t think I’ll ever be the same again now that I know it.BogusMeatFactory wrote: [3d blast] is just EXTREME FLICKY!!!

Re: Do You Have Any Unpopular Gaming Opinions?
I dislike nearly every Mario game until the Gamecube, except for Mario RPG. The 2d Mario games just never really interested me until I played New Super Mario Bros on the Wii with my son. That game got a hold of us and we played it for 2 years pretty regularly and have nearly 100%, just 3 more Star Coins to get on 3 different levels in the hidden world and it's tough. After the Wii got my son obsessed with Mario I started going back to try some of the old Marios again. I like Yoshi's Island but the rest I really couldn't care for.
Sonic games will always hold a special place for me. It's the blast processing, man. I love it. But seriously, most of my bias is from nostalgia of the Genesis being my first and sadly only Sega console. Other than that I just like the art and design more than Mario. I really never played any 3d Sonic games so I can't comment on them. Seems to me 2d Sonic games require multiple playthroughs to get the most out of them. The first time around is too fast and frantic and it always kinda bothered me that some situations in those games are literally unavoidable unless you know they're coming. Still love them though.
Some other unpopular opinions - I dislike Halo, Gears of War, God of War, Assassins Creed, and I like ...Quest 64... there I said it, cat's out of the bag.

That first section sums up why I never liked sonic, the games encourage you to go fast, and when you do, you run headfirst into a wall of spikes. It totally defeated the purpose for me and I never liked games where memorization was the key to victory.funk_Farmer wrote:. I never played quest 64 but my brother loved that game and I do have fond memories of staying up late watching him play it, so you are not alone on that one.

I, too, enjoy Quest 64. No shame, fellas. No shame.pook99 wrote:I never played quest 64 but my brother loved that game and I do have fond memories of staying up late watching him play it, so you are not alone on that one.funk_Farmer wrote:Some other unpopular opinions - I dislike Halo, Gears of War, God of War, Assassins Creed, and I like ...Quest 64... there I said it, cat's out of the bag.
